Does Tesla's Cybertruck Look The Way It Does Because Of These Requirements?

I assume that Tesla set the following requirements that the Tesla Cybertruck design must satisfy:

  1. Tough exterior.
  2. Low aerodynamic resistance to allow long-range and high efficiency.
  3. Large and comfortable interior.
  4. Variable ground clearance, low for ingress and egress and highway driving and quite high for rough terrain.
  5. Good storage, bed and towing capacity.
  6. Battery capacity to provide long-range and high efficiency.

You are trying too hard to justify an incomplete design. There are no crumple zones for crash worthiness - especially important in a tesla product. Forward visibility is severely impaired by very thick A pillars and the angle of the flat windshield. There are no windshield wipers nor review mirrors. The headlights will not meet current regulatory requirements. The aerodynamic drag has not been measured. Other trucks can adjust their ride height without looking like a box.
The cargo bed lacks the capabilities of full size pickups like the Ford F-150.
In short, it looks like this just to gain attention. It is as impractical as it is stupid.

I'm pretty sure this will crash better than any other truck, not worried about that at all. There is a frunk, bed, and the doors are like 80 lbs made out of stainless steel.

All 3 mirrors are consolidated into one screen where the rearview mirror would be.

Cargo bed is larger than a F150 and has an automatic cover (that looks awesome btw). Not to mention a built in ramp.

Front visibility I don't know about. I did read there is an extra camera in the front by the bumper.

I thought that too about the large, flat, steep windshield. On a hot, sunny day in California where most teslas are sold that interior will bake cookies.

SanJoseTeslaPR, you can be sure all you want, but without crumple zones and that flat stainless it will kill the occupants, probably instantly which is more humane than in the inevitable fire.
And an extra camera does not help when the A pillars are as thick as they are.

There are multiple sheets of stainless steel for the doors, it functions the same as a crumple zone. Obviously the front and back are buffered by large storage areas that would be impacted first before passengers.

Given the DLO design, this: "...I'm pretty sure this will crash better than any other truck..." is not true. It will accordion given the dumb roof design.

It looks the way it does due to the material it is made from. Those are the shapes you get. Not the complex stampings that we are used to seeing with steel and aluminum. As said above, it was also designed using an Etch-a-Sketch or a napkin. They were going for cool but just ended up with juvenile. For their sake I hope all the deposits convert into sales.

This shape isn't remotely aerodynamic.

@SJD You'd lose that bet, dimwit.

The DLO is the greatest aerodynamic no-no, then the blunt face and on and on.

You can do meth with Elon and be his pleasure boy all you want, but the real world is a bitch, son.

Already MD, if this turns out to be more aerodynamic than a F150, how about you eat your words and buy a Cybertruck. If it isn't, I'll cancel my reservation ;)

First principles approach, can they cut cost by rethinking how the truck gets built. Stainless steel means it doesn't have to be painted. The sharp angles means it doesn't need a press, just laser cut and fold the steel. By cutting the size of the factory and steps needed to build this... you can specs that exceed a $140k Model X for $70k. The design isn't for everyone but I like it the more I see it. Still hope they swap out the marble in the interior.

My take, Why this is a Truck failure and an is just Elon Musk vanity exercise.

1. Let's get the worst feature out of the way the bed is a joke. It offers the least utility in the class. Why do most people buy trucks? Because they have truckbeds.

2. 2.9 0-60 times the most insignificant stat in the truck market. Want proof how many diesel trucks do the sell.

3. Seats six, well looking at the slope of the roof, it may seat six, but only three comfortably

4.The size. You want the resell value truck on the market, order a four-door long wheelbase truck. Why it won't fit in the majority of garages.

5.IMHO, This is the Hummer H1 of the 2020s, big, garish, and almost no real-world function. It's just to be seen in.

6. Complete form over function. One look at this monstrosity and you can tell it's a truck design by people who don't drive trucks. It's just put together to have bragging specs but no real practicality.

7. It's not clever, it's not practical, it's just an automotive fashion statement. A complete failure as a real truck.

1. How does offering a larger bed with a ramp and automatic metal torneau cover provide less utility? There are also 110/220V outlets back there that can charge something as you drive... and a built in air compressor.

2. Just because no other truck exists that can do 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, it doesn't make it not a selling point.

3. Look at the videos, everyone that sat in it was surprised at how much room there is both in the front and the back.

4. This is true, I think it will fit in mine just barely if I take everything out all the way to the wall. 19 feet is pretty damn long.

5. Plenty of utility in the numbers and functionality provided. $40k for a 6 person truck with a 6.5 foot bed and almost no maintenance?

6. Maybe

7. Time will tell

Orders are inflated by Tesla charging depositors credit cards 3 times and more, greatly inflating the number of deposits.
Formal complaints are being filed. Sounds like fraud from an increasingly desperate Elon.

Give Ford a bit of credit for doing an all aluminum F150, for doing PHEV Lincolns, and for "bothering" with the Mach-E.

You have to be a Tesla fanboy to make that $100 donation. If you are anyway close to earth or reality, this thing will never happen remotely close to what's shown nor presented in so many ways. That's if Tesla will be around long enough to launch it...

Tough exterior? Ha! AS a pick up truck owner for 30 years, I needed cargo box tie down point, adjustable cargo dividers to stabilize contents.
Also, I required side and rear 3/4 uninterrupted view for safety. This Tesla truck flunks the test with flying colors.

This fantasy drawing exercise 'cybertruck' joke is UN-USEABLE to 99% of the real truck owners. It is a marketing gimmick done by the huckster Elon Musk.

No surprise there is probable fraud involved in these numbers. Complaints are being filed that people putting deposits down are being 3 and more times, inflating the number of deposits.
Elon sounds desperate.

Suspending reality for the all the many, many, many excellent points noted above, what kind of accounting magic is necessary to sell this for about $40,000 to $70,000 like other luxury pickup trucks.

Maybe Elon has bent over for Softbank's Mr. Masayoshi Son? Now that he has burned thru some of his money after being seduced by Adam Neumann of 'We Work" (who is no longer bending over because he got kicked to the curb), Mr Son needs another fawning "visionary" to shovel money at.

Tesla is the next to get "We-Worked". This $140,000 pickup truck is just a sign of "judgement day" [that's the legal version, not the religious version - 'in law, a judgment is a decision of a court regarding the rights and liabilities of parties in a legal action or proceeding. Judgments also generally provide the court's explanation of why it has chosen to make a particular court order.].

By the way, Rivian stole Tesla's pickup truck thunder and he Elon is now playing petulant child trying to get people to pay attention to him - he is sort of like Trump in that he wants ANY attention at all - good, bad, really bad, cataclysmic - just as long as he is in the news.

This Cyber Truck is a joke.

No painting or stamping, fewer parts, easier to build... that's how you get to these prices. I'm sure there will be options to drive up the costs as well.

Vdiv - the Model X is most certainly a joke - have they sold 10,000 yet? Its as good as dead.

Model 3 might not be a joke at this point, but vehicles rusting like mid-1970's Fiats does not bode well for customer engagement. Every Tesla on the market has a huge "BUT" to overlook....not a long-term strategy.

Its like that person we all know...were it not for the (drug problem, dishonesty, meanness, etc)_________ s/he would be a great friend.

List of feature people probably did not notice on the truck:

https://www.teslarati.com/top-10-tesla-cybertruck-hidden-features-you-may-have-missed/

Has tie downs all along the bed and two hidden compartments on the sail pillars on each side of the vehicle. Plenty of space for easy access tools.
