Is The Tesla's Cybertruck The Distraction That Rivian Needs To Succeed Against The Detroit 3?
The Tesla Cybertruck is not a vehicle that could be appreciated by everyone. Uncompromisingly futuristic and angular to a fault, the vehicle looks less like a traditional pickup compared to other all-electric trucks like the Rivian R1T. Thanks to its polarizing looks, Tesla critics have predicted that the Cybertruck would be a flop, since the vehicle would not appeal to traditional “truck people,” who have preconceived notions about what a pickup should look like.

To be fair, the Cybertruck has received harsh criticism from a good number of classic pickup truck enthusiasts. Yet, despite this, the idea that the all-electric truck would fail because it would not appeal to a “typical Ford F-150 buyer” will likely be proven wrong. In fact, if one were to look at the history of Tesla’s vehicles, particularly the Model 3, one would note that the electric car maker’s cars do not really need the support of an existing demographic to be a success.

Rivian has played the game better. It linked to Ford and that link is apparently going somewhere.

We'll see. So far the predictions made in the comments section of this site have sucked epically.

But based on the comments Tesla is going to go bankrupt soon in 2017.

Rivian has some impressive looking technology but as of now unproven. If their claims on range/performance are true they will be in a very strong position...especially if Ford gives them significant help with their industrial operations. They can also leverage their relationship with Amazon to sell vehicles and onsite servicing right through Amazon.com.

If they have something, Ford has the engineering prowess to make it work.

If Rivian's core competence is their technology platform, a more profitable strategy may be leveraging it across multiple partners and skipping the the cash sucking branding, auto assembly, marketing, distribution, and sales parts of the business. They already have a gorilla of a partner for the latter two in Amazon who invested in them. Ford does the others already and needs an EV platform. Clearly the industry is undergoing a total reformation.

If Rivian has a competent platform, it will need someone like Ford to engineer it for reliability and quality control. The #1 issue with Tesla's future isn't product but the inability of Tesla to do adequate prototype time to make a truly quality product. Cars simply don't rust within the first minutes of ownership or have the chrome self-destruct (among other things).

This truck was DEFINITELY designed on a paper napkin by some inebriated person.
