Lincoln To Use Rivian Skateboard Chassis For New EV SUV
A battery-powered Lincoln SUV, due in mid-2022, will be the first Ford Motor Co (F.N) vehicle built on a custom electrified chassis that resembles a skateboard, which was developed by Ford-backed startup Rivian, according to several people familiar with the program.

The all-wheel-drive Lincoln SUV could compete against Rivian’s R1S, an electric sport utility vehicle slated to go into production in early 2021 that will be priced from $72,500. Both models will use Rivian’s so-called skateboard, a flexible platform that combines electric motors, batteries, controls and suspension.

With Ford in the mix, quality will jump from a company that has no engineering or production experience.

Maybe but the chassis and drive train on display at last year's NY Auto show was extremely impressive visually and from an engineering prospective. It was what Ford was after and is putting directly to use. This may be one of the few automotive joint ventures that actually works and brings to market a vehicle worth purchasing.

Ford is being shrewd by leveraging Rivian and VW. Meanwhile GM is clueless about EVs and how to market them. The Bolt EV crossover should be morphed into a Buick Electra.

I really wonder if Rivian will actually become a successful BEV brand or if Ford will just quietly fold it at some point having used its IP and platform for their own needs. Seems unlikely to me.

GM should NOT have done the Bolt. It should have been a Buick crossover and a Cadillac entry level coupesedan EV

Ford will fold them in if is successful, as it is likely. Not only does Ford have much greater production and engineering experience, but also far greater reach with their dealer network and marketing.

Maybe but it will cost them. The young guy running Rivian knows exactly what he is doing and what he has got.

Except now that Ford is bought in, he cannot call that shot with them. The one thing Rivian DOES NOT HAVE is any engineering experience to make cars actually durable and reliable. So, even if he wanted to pretend that he's the king plow boy, he needs Ford desperately.

The New EV SUV should resurrect the Town Car name and be a 4 or 5 place opulent ride sized about as big as an Aviator but much lower to the ground.

Since it might have the name Town Car, it should not be an SUV
But it should have suicide doors

SUVs can have suicide doors.

The Continental had suicide doors for a while.

The Town Car had conventional doors.

Smart way to start a car company - build out the tech yourself and then partner to contract manufacture and extend your brand.

Lincoln (Ford) is an excellent way to launch the tech. Ford can offer endless marketing support. Smart.

Says a lot about their confidence in the Mach E platform.

non-sequitur response

They bought into Rivian to keep others out, so now they have to do something with it.
