Brilliant Or Bonehead? Mazda Says Next Gen Miata May Be Electric
Mazda is mulling over whether or not the next-gen MX-5 Miata should move into the electrification segment, something that could actually put it in line with the next-gen Porsche 718 should everything play out the right way. The important thing is that, no matter what, the next-gen MX-5 will remain light, compact, and agile, but how that’s going to happen is a mystery that Mazda still has to solve.

Hybrid maybe but not in favor of electric just yet. Miata's are about light weight, handling and visceral feel (clutch, manual, steering)...speed at the expense of more weight less appealing.

We're at the point where a well-designed EV can weigh the same as the ICE equivalent if you're good with 150-200 miles of range.

Sure way to fail.
If we want an electric golf cart, we go to the golf course. If we want a visceral sports car, we drive a gas engine powered car.

And if they put a heavy battery pack in the MX-5, there goes everything that makes a MX-5 a MX-5.

Hybrid maybe, all electric.... no.

Not surprised as it seems automakers are making horrible decisions with some of their historic nameplates. I'm look mainly at you ford for putting the Mustang name on a pathetic soccer mom ev crossover.

BONEHEAD

The next Miata should be a 2.5T monster.

Folks who buy a Miata want an elemental sports car that delivers visceral and AURAL excitement. They're not looking for an electric motor whine.

I've been told in here for years that they were actually being purchased by hairdressers. Which is it?

As the emission and mileage standards get higher and higher - we should ALL be looking at Hybrids and EVs as sports cars for the future since they as they stretch the performance envelope - they emit more and get poorer mileage.

I actually expected the use of a Rotary Engine in Hybrids - because they MIGHT be able to get them clean enough for duty as the charging engine in the car - but be lighter than a regular piston engine.

Doesn't an EV Miata count as a cute tchotchke?
