Is GM's CEO, Mary Barra, Making A HUGE Mistake NOT Spinning Off A Corvette Sub-brand ASAP?
When it comes to General Motors and the Chevrolet Corvette, it seems that GM may have had enough innovation for the time being. I guess that is sort of understandable.

It did just take probably its most iconic nameplate and change its setup entirely by moving to a mid-engine layout.

And GM bosses aren't stupid. They know they're taking a HUGE risk. But, there's just one thing: It may also be suffering an opportunity cost by NOT playing into what the market is asking for.

That would be high-performance sport-utility vehicles and four-door coupes. The Corvette nameplate is primed for this, however, it seems like GM is passing this up — for now. MotorTrend spoke with GM's CEO, Mary Barra, who noted the conglomerate is playing it safe but not closing the door entirely.

So, we've got to wonder: Is Barra/GM making a HUGE mistake by NOT moving fast on this trend? GM always seems to be reactive than proactive and it suffers for this.

...What about making Corvette its own brand or a subbrand like Ford is doing with Mustang?

"I think you have to be really careful because you have to understand what makes the brand the brand," Barra told us. "So I'm not going to say never, but I think if General Motors were to ever do anything, we would assess it very, very carefully.

"Corvette means something so special to so many people," Barra continued. It must be managed carefully because it is so important to its long-term success that it lives up to the name...

I could see GM expanding the Camaro franchise into a number of cars - maybe even a four door - and an SUV - and the Alpha2 Platform is excellent - and would be a good starting point

I do not see the need to expand the Corvette beyond a Coupe and Convertible.

Most important - we do not need another "Brand" from anyone - there are already too many of them - and I certainly would not want to see the Corvette become part of Cadillac either.

Spot on!

GM has plenty of unused platforms & tech mothballed for this type of market situation. The Corvette program should be left as-is. Simply adding variants using vastly different platforms will only erode consumer perception in the long term.

Mary Barra is a gender token idiot. She got the job solely because she wasn't a man and her stewardship of GM has resulted in the company losing ground. Launching Corvette as a brand aimed at Porsche would be genius. But she is too stupid to see that she needed the C7 and the C8. Kick her to the curb.

As you can see, it's not bullsh!t.

It's a completely valid topic and GM is, once again, going to be last to the party...

It would only work if the execution is perfect, something GM does not have a good track record in this regard. Also, they would need to kill GMC and Buick. Buick and Cadillac sell to the same demographic. GM's are Chevy trucks with a different grill.

MD, I do not think Barra is a token, but she is emblematic of the problems with GM. Her marching orders were to restore earnings, but at what costs? GM has always been guided by accounting first. If Cadillac had gone down the path of building the Ciel and other big, stylish, luxury cars and built SUVs all off of those the returns on this investment in brand equity would be huge.

She IS a token as Barry Soetoro essentially appointed her... That said her father was a lifer and she is as well. She wants to change the culture but how when its the only one you've ever known... GM desperately needs fresh leadership with outside "this box" ideas. Regardless of who is currently there, they need to clean house. The company is spinning down the toilet... its as embarassing as Biden getting a citizens face, challenging someone to do push ups and take an IQ test... idiot(s)....

Have you seen tRump at his rallies? Calling people names, saying to supporters to punch protesters, etc. All straight from the fascist playbook.
Bloomberg will crush tRump if he is still around.

Keep dreaming toad... Bill ClintStones wife spent $1B and had the media on her side with everyone predicting 98% to 2% and Trump kicked her bitter, angry, 'substantial" butt. Bloomberg has cash but he's not Trump. BUT he's got to get Creepy Joe to step aside and that won't happen.

Never thought I'd see a better President than Reagan, but Trump is there. He throws the pathetic DemoCrap trash right back in their sorry faces. Guy works for FREE not line his pockets like BS or BC... neither made more than $70K in their lives but now are worth hundreds of millions. You've got to be a stupid idiot (look in the mirror dude) to support them.

Get ready to cry because America loves Trump and we love him... Oh and your 401K is way up because of Trump even one as pathetic as yours! I'm sure you'll trash talk him but pull that lever to keep the economic BOOM goin. Cant wait till the Inspector Generals report comes out on Monday!!! DemoTrash losers are going down... enjoy the ride troofy...

Media on her side?!? You guys are so weak. tRump only goes on state run media FUX. He is too weak to stand up to questioning. Ran away from NATO conference like a little girl with her feelings. That is why he uses Twitter, so no one can argue back.
And by the way xjug, the boom started under Obama. It is going on 10 years and tRump has only been president for 3. Do the math if you can.
The GDP and jobs growth were better in Obama's second than in tRump's 3, due to a not well thought out trade war.
Stupid is as stupid does.
I am supporting Bloomberg. A guy worth 11 times what tRump claims to be. Who did not inherit his company from daddy, did not declare multiple bankruptcies and can actually govern.
And one report from DOJ already exonerated the FBI. You are white trash that supports the racists, lawless administration. You claim to love America, but the president ignores the rules of law, the constitution and the values our founding fathers values.
Oh, and my 401 grew faster under Obama the under tRump. Go do some research trailer trash.

OF all the things GM needs to do the right the ship, grow sales, profits and EBITA, turning Corvette into a brand with a model lineup of its own may be on the list, but I doubt it is in the top 10 or 15 action items. There is just too much to do.

Corvette sells relatively small numbers of cars. The 'Corvette brand' will not survive.

You sure about that? As a sports car, Corvette does a rather respectable volume. Add in a "Cayenne" and a "Macan" and watch sales go up, up, up.

In 2018 Porsche sold 35k 911's globally. In a good year the Corvette can do that just on USA sales volume. In a bad, year half that or even less. If you look at other EU makes that are comparable performance they sell in the low 1,000's per year. Some even less.

Lamborghini unit sales are up 51% now due to the release and sale of the Urus SUV. All sold from $200-$300k USD. I expect they would go higher with the addition of a smaller SUV and a sedan. This is the Porsche playbook and it can work for any luxury brand that wants to expand beyond 2 seat sports cars. If you don't get it that's ok, soon you will understand once sales start to roll in and transform the Corvette into a standalone brand.
