Cadillac To Kill Germanic Naming Convention And Go Back To Traditional Names

Cadillac To Kill Germanic Naming Convention And Go Back To Traditional Names
General Motors President Mark Reuss believes Cadillac has one last shot at reestablishing itself as a leading luxury brand in America, and to do that, GM seems to believe a Hail Mary is in order. Cadillac will be totally reinvented in the 2020s as an electric vehicle brand, with revamped styling like that of the concept vehicle above, and an old-school overhaul of its naming scheme involving an elimination of alphanumeric nameplates. Put simply, Cadillac won't sell keyboard salad cars like the CT4 and XT6; it'll sell cars with actual names again.

Hurrah, the best idea that's come out of Cadillac since the "V" series.

And they would not necessarily need to rest on "legacy" names. They've had a few good ones on show cars: Imaj, Ciel, Escala, and Elmiraj.

Its always puzzling when big companies take so long to make a change in course that was so apparent to so many for so long. Don't just change the names without a significant effort to recapture the traits that made the brand in the first place...American luxury, size, power, comfort and elegant design. Slapping a name on metal alone wont cut it...remember the Cimarron!

At least design is in the right direction

I guess the geniuses at Cadillac think the the word "Eldorado" is a German word. Maybe they will rename the car the TOL, "tub of lard" Cadillac.

Talk is cheap. They need to follow through. @MD also said they need to stop showing amazing concepts and start making them. They need to dream and than deliver. No focus groups. They know what to do, so do it.

So, what are they gonna name them now, fleetwood mac, seville, coupe de ville and all that old crap? Caddy needs to get with the times, no one calls luxury cars by name boomer! lol

With that kind of thinking, I'd tell you to go screw yourself but I'm not confident that your DNA made that a possibility. #DISMISSED

Besides NO ONE is buying Cadillacs with alphanumeric system. For your logic (sic) to be true, alpha numeric would have to have been a successful naming scheme for cars, but for Lincoln, Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura, and I would argue Genesis, it's been exactly what NOT to do. That notion helped kill Pontiac.

THere are still lots of cars with names - the whole Lamborghini line has them. ANd while you bring up some old names - I note that on its show cars Cadillac has not used the OLD names either.

IF names were the problem - though - I think they would have learned that from Customer studies years ago. THe problem is the cars. AS good as they are - and the platforms have been pretty good for the sedans - the SUV's are just typical GM retreads. And the sedans have been good performers but failed at being good cars. THe ATS was a packaging Nightmare - and the new CT4/CT5 are better - but who designed that roof line so that a 6 foot person cannot sit in the back seat without hitting the headliner?

And now they are cancelling their only big cars - the CT6 and XTS.

Whoever (I suppose DeNysschen) was asleep at the wheel failed to get these car to the LUXURY level. THey do have a chance - now that they are a class larger than their price levels - but WHO KNOWS ABOUT IT but the faithful? They don't advertise it - do they?

Conversely, a good car can be ruined by a dumb name. The CT6 is a good car but no one knows what CT6 is. Had they called it the Cadillac Elmiraj, it would have been a much bigger splash.

Exactly. Call it the Elmiraj and lead with the top of the line V8.

Porsche Cayman, Cayenne, Mecan; Lamborghini Urus, Aventador; Land Rover Velar, Discover, etc, etc.
Yea, you're right arrowmg, no one puts names on luxury cars anymore.

so you guys think that with the stroke of a pen and a wave of the magic wand, name the car Elmiraj and the car will just blow out the sales targets? wow that's crazy logic. unless it's a well selling legacy model name, people don't care. The brand's reputation is what matters. For instance everybody can see with their naked eyes that the CT6 is supposed to be caddy's large sedan that appeals to modern sentiments, as opposed to the XTS which is the large car that appeals to traditionalists. The CT6 is a nice car for caddy but unfortunately many younger Xers and Millenials (except for the ones that like the gaudy escalade) have moved on. We don't care what the name is.

@arrowmg You're such a full blown idiot. When Cadillac introduced its large sedan, they "supported" it with the "Dare Greatly" campaign. CTS, STS, DTS, and ATS had been utter failures largely attributed to identity crisis. What does "CTS" mean? So they took the failed naming system and ADDED confusion. What is the difference between a CTS and a CT6? CTS and CT5 even look alike in text. Patently stupid. Given the failure of the alphabet soup, it WOULD HAVE been Cadillac daring greatly to have introduced it as the Elmiraj. Elmiraj tested very well as a name with customers. Escala tested even better. But instead, shit-for-brains De Nysschen had already set in motion more disaster before his favorite hook-up Mary B. kicked him to the curb and the stupid ho Mary B. wasn't smart enough to do something.

Like the Continental did for Lincoln, the use of a name would have been a focal point for the reinvigoration of the brand. While the Continental has not been the sales success Ford had hoped for, it has been a brilliant marketing success. People knew that real Lincolns had names. People knew that the Continental was a real Lincoln. Hence it let people believe that Lincoln was back.

Good news for Cadillac. The article opines that they should not use the old names, however I think a mix of those along with those they have used for their concept cars would be just fine. Let's hope they are opulent and powerful as a base premise no matter the market segments they target.
