Brilliant Or Bonehead? BMW Wants To Strip Clubman Of Wagon Status And Change It Into Another SUV

The MINI Clubman could become a totally different car as owner BMW reportedly considers turning the next-generation model into an SUV.

While that fails to surprise anyone in a market where crossovers and sports utility vehicles are king, it does make us wonder whether a Clubman SUV would be able to retain the identity of a model that has always been a wagon since its debut in 1969.

SUV is where the users want. Nobody wants a mini size expensive hatchback!

In reality - SUVs are basically raised Station Wagons - with enough ground clearance to allow some type of four/all wheel drive. There are lots of SUV's whose base models do not even have four wheel drive as well.

The mini - as well as the Fiat 500 and other micro-minis are cars that sell in Europe mostly - maybe a few emerging markets - but with the exception of some Performance variants - do not sell in the US because they are simply TOO SMALL. BMW would do better to stop the Mini in the USA - they cannot be making money on it

A CUV is a raised wagon, an SUV has a low range, a transfer case and can actually go off road. SUV are becoming rarer while CUV are the new automotive plague.

The best selling MINI is the Countryman a CUV.

They should end Mini as a stand alone brand, reduce the offerings, and house them at BMW dealers.

While some standalone MINI dealerships exist, most are adjacent to BMW stores. Many share the same piece of land. Melding them into the BMW dealership is likely feasible at most locations.

Not as bad as a Mustang SUV.
Waiting for third row seats.
