What's The NUMBER ONE Motivating Factor In YOUR Purchasing Decision Today? Price? Power? Utility? Tech? Infotainment?
Today's automotive industry is undergoing a major shift. And it's not just electric vehicles. Between hybridization, catering to die-hard enthusiasts with greater lifetime value and the average consumers desiring sport-utility vehicles, it's a tough time to be making judgment calls at automakers.

One or two wrong moves can put a manufacturer in an extremely bad position.

All that considered, buyers are still flocking to showrooms. Gas prices, relatively speaking, are low and incentives are quite plentiful if you know how to shop.

One thing we're trying to understand here at AutoSpies is how buyers may be changing in their attitudes. It's clear that dealerships are having to adjust their strategies and tactics. Negotiating has many different flavors these days as buyers and sellers meet to do hand-to-hand combat.

But what intrigues me most right now is what is the "X" factor for today's car shoppers. What's the number ONE motivating factor in YOUR purchasing decision? Is it price, power, utility (space), technology/features, infotainment (software) or something else?

Let us know in the comments below!

I expect excellent value for the price, compelling styling, unassailable reliability. The first two I can waffle on but there is absolutely no excuse for poor reliability.

The Giulia I had for a couple weeks went into limp mode a couple of times and was fond of dying in traffic. There is no room for that at any price. If a TVR is more reliable, you've got a problem.

My NUMBER 1 factor in buying a car is to first see how MDarringer feels about it. How many childish and juvenile names will he use to describe the car and how many nasty, sexist, mysogynist, racist and trumpish names can he call the viewers who disagree with his stupidity? Isn't that the same motivation and rationale that ALL Americans, Asians and Europeans use to buy a new car? Darringer's opinion is so important. Its a good thing that he spends all day and night publishing his (opinions) to a website that only he spends copious amounts of wasted time scribbling his asinine taunts.

You have clear anger issues and your fixation on me says you're psychotic and addicted to me. Because if you weren't addicted to me, you'd completely ignore me.

1) Fun to drive - I want an enjoyable journey every time 2) Decent tech - does not have to be the best 3) Decent utility but not necessarily an SUV which may dilute #1. 4) Good reliability but I don't need it to be a Toyota either as most cars are close in reliability and better than almost any car 10-15 years ago. 5) Style - needs to look decent.

1. Understated sport and luxury styling. (No styling gimmicks I.e. Lexus)
2. Good tech (but I don’t need parlor tricks i.e. Tesla)
3. Great interior style, materials, and fit and finish
4. Great AWD
5. Above average power, but does not need to be crazy
6. Sharp and precise handling, with a stiffer suspension, but not something that will rattle the car to death.

1 Reliability -which rules out anything European
2 Resale -I want my assets to retain as much resale value as possible
3 Comfort -I need comfy seating as I drive lots and have a bad back
4 Sound System -I need good sound for my rolling office
5 Cargo Space -I haul lots of crap on long road trips and need space
6 Styling -That is subjective and only has to appeal to me

I am assuming you drive a Camry and don’t earn much money. Great way to enjoy life driving an appliance.

I make plenty of money but just don't like to squander it on stupid shit, depreciating assets nor do I have to impress anyone with what I drive... After 13 BMW's (325, M3, M5, Z8) I am done with the brand and Euro cars in general. Yes I drive a Toyota in the form of a Lexus RX and I don't want anything faster than that as it only brings out the Nigel Mansell in me. If only I could have got the RX with a stick shift.

Huh? Funniest (i.e. most absurd) thing I have read all week.

1) All of my car purchases have a manual transmission first.
2) Then I look for form factor. Sedan, sports car or wagon
3) Driving position: Seats and ergonomics
4) Suspension or easy ability to add a coil over set up
5) mid level power as I don't need too much power on the street.
6) Interior materials.

I have at least some advantages that I am unaware any other person here has in this case - I can actually afford virtually any car/vehicle. ANd I already have a number that are over $300,000. The fact that I have quite a number of cars - means that reliability is not as much of an issue since I can just take another car. I already have cars that supposedly can go about 200 mph - I will never find out personally. There comes a point where "Power" means something only if you are pulling a HOUSE behind your vehicle - my current cars have plenty more than I will ever use.

For most of My life - making cars from parts from the Junk Yard - I did not have the luxury of caring about most of the even most mundane "need" above. The engine starting was probably the most important. I even drove a car that did not work in reverse for a week before I had a chance to pull out the trans and fix it.

So - now - although I would have never thought I would care - today - I can buy a car simply because I want to be seen in it! And you know what - I have several of those cars - and I find myself driving my Grandchildren around in my Chrysler Mini-van more often than ALL of the others combined. And I would rather be seen with them - than with just a car as well. Now too old to care about track performance - which I was heavily into years ago - a car is again an appliance to get me from here to there - same today as with my 1929 Chevy - my first car. And as long as it does that - I am okay with it.

That one is easy - according to the Dictionary - a CAR has an internal Combustion Engine. TEsla is NOT a car to begin with.

Sucks to be on the losing team, good look to you on the future as more and more cars on the road are Teslas.
