SUV WARS! In The Battle Of The Lexus RX L And Volvo XC90, WHICH Are YOU Taking Home?
After just writing about the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, I think I made it clear that the luxury sport-utility vehicle market is quite hot with a tremendous amount of competition. Well, here's two other offerings to add to the fire.

That would be the Lexus RX L and Volvo XC90.

Both take two completely different approaches to solving buyer's dilemmas. The Lexus takes a more traditional approach and its cockpit displays that. The Volvo, on the other hand, features a far more sophisticated design with its iPad-like infotainment display.

Ultimately though, we want to know which — of the two — is the better buy. The team at Auto Express recently put them together in a head-to-head situation to see what's what. Its verdict is below.

That said, we want to know: WHICH SUV are YOU taking home? The Lexus RX L or the Volvo XC90?

Verdict

First place: Volvo XC90

It’s worth paying the extra for the XC90 T8’s plug-in capability because the efficiency potential and running costs advantages outweigh this for business users and private buyers. It’s more efficient on paper and in the real world, while R-Design gets enough kit. It’s a shame you have to pay for a few extras, but otherwise, the more efficient, more spacious XC90 is the more convincing hybrid seven-seat SUV.

Second place: Lexus RX

The new RX L is a little better. Connectivity advances have added to its appeal, but the infotainment system is still poor. The car is also slightly more comfortable and slightly better to drive. We can’t fault the quality or kit, but as a seven-seat hybrid SUV, it’s not as versatile as the Volvo when it comes to efficiency and practicality. However, it’s still a usefully economical machine that’s nicely refined.

Lexus has the better drivetrain and reliability. According to the article it drives better and is more comfortable along with being less expensive. The Volvo is better looking, but aside from that the Lexus gets the win. For my money I would go with the Telluride.

The Lexus will be much more reliable than the Volvo and retain much more resale value longer term with a much larger pool of potential buyers so it is the clear and only choice. I have a RX Sport 3 and love it but bought it for the Mark Levinson audio which is really nice and will sound even nicer once I get it all Dynomatted. I do however prefer the seats of the gf's NX as they offer better lumbar support and are more comfy to me. That and Volvo parts make BMW and Benz parts look cheap in comparison...

Like my wife stated when I almost get her an RX,” I am not 70 and everyone has one”. I would personally take the Volvo instead of the RAV4/Highlander. BTW my wife decided on the Macan S.

I couldn’t go into my garage and look at that Lexus grille every day. I just couldn’t do it.

Funny comparison - Brits love Volvo's and the love Lexus' also. The UK might be the only country in Europe where Lexus sells in volume (or sells at all).

Kind of like the old British Auto Mag reviews of "Jaguar vs BMW vs Mercedes" the Jaguar always won because the British journalists were so biased.

There is definitely a 'pro-Volvo' bias whenever a Brit Mag includes a Volvo in a comparo test.

Of those two, the RXL gets my money. Yes, its a terrible design, but the Volvo is overpriced for what you get and the powertrains are harsh for such an expensive vehicle.

The Volvo. No question. Lexus is far too ugly to purchase.

Canadians have a bit of Scot in them and we hang onto our vehicles a bit longer. I can still see first and 2nd Gen Lexus RX models on the road going strong to this day. Nothing can touch Lexus reliability. I can say the same about Acura MDX's too.

Neither. Lexus is more reliable but butt ugly. Volvo is better looking but not reliable. Buy something for less money and call it a day.

The Volvo

Oh wait I see we can choose something else besides just the Lexys and Volvo. Then Telluride would be my choice.

If you compared a Telluride versus an XC90, you'd wonder why the Volvo is 2X the price when comparably equipped because the Telluride is more refined. The stench of Geely comes through in the XC90.

The drivetrain alone gives the win to the Telluride.

Of these two, I'd just get the RX and save the money. No need for a 3rd row that is literally unusable.
