Lunacy? Ford Still Plans To Axe The Fusion Despite Doing Well In The Segment With Over 166,000 Sales

Ford’s plan to kill off its cars has been a perplexing thing since news of it came out in early 2018, and remains so nearly two years later. That’s underscored by Ford’s own sales reports, because even as crossover and SUV sales continue to skyrocket, the Ford Fusion sedan still pours out of the dealership lot.

The Fusion, the last we heard, will live through at least 2021 before it becomes a victim of Ford’s carpocalypse—a killing of Ford’s cars, which will spare the Mustang, as a result of the demand for crossovers, trucks and SUVs. But Ford announced its annual 2019 sales on Monday, and Fusion numbers are still remarkable in both the context of Ford’s lineup and in comparison to other sedans on the market.

Sales helped by dropped Taurus and Focus, plus not enough profit.

Having no sedans is stupid.

Building the Fusion longer isn't the great move though. The design has been in production since 2013 and the CD4 was a very quickly updated EUCD platform, so the car under it is OLD.

The BETTER move would be to build the Focus sedan for the USA. The 1.5 3T is a great engine and the 8 speed transmission is excellent. Add an ST sedan and you'd be good to go.

No doubt Ford would sell enough Focuses in Mexico, the USA, and Canada to make it work.

The Fusion is not unprofitable though.

When the Mustang moves to the CD6 platform in two years, that is possible.

Last time I checked CD391 (on CD4) production began in 2012, not 2013. That should be very simple to remember.

That being said, the Edge is not a good substitute for Fusion.

LOL! You are really uninformed. There will be no CD6 Mustang anytime soon as it stands.

Up until late 2017, there was going to be this year, Job 1 for S650 on CD6 in December 2020 and February 2021 launch.

Hackett killed that several months after being hired, then ordered an S550 facelift for 2022.

No all-new Mustang until mid-decade. CD6 or not. The coupe redesign isn't guaranteed, unless the Ford family fights for it against the board and Hackett's wishes.

Would've had an all-new 2021 Mustang shedding existing D2C roots in camouflage if not for him. (U725 Bronco follows timeline)

Fiscally sound business wise, but lazy altogether.

Still at this stage in its life it’s long paid for tooling... maybe they should reconsider. And when will Lincoln get it’s Mark version of the Mustang?

The Mach E platform could produce a 4-door Mustang-E sedan and from that they could pull a new Continental.

Doing a new Mark would be pointless because expensive coupes just don't sell and the Mustang is not cheap as is.

I’m talking El Miraj type Coupe from the platform not another useless 2 seat GT.... i still think there’s a market for a big well styled 4 seat coupe, think final gen CTS or CT6 size...

Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and Kia are now basking in the net effect of Ford's decision to pull all sedans.

Was discontinuing them now a premature move on Ford's part?

PS: The Accord is in deep caca for sales.

Not having a sedan is stupid. There are plenty of people who don't want a soccer mom crossover. The other automakers will benefit.

Yes, the Accord has been a sales dud for Honda. But the Civic has picked up a lot of sales that would have gone to the Focus. It's the #1 selling vehicle in California.
