The 1968 Ford Mustang GT Driven In Bullitt Breaks Record, Sells For $3.7MM
A dull green 1968 Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the movie "Bullitt" just became the most valuable Ford Mustang ever sold at auction. It went for $3.7 million, including auction fees, at the annual Mecum collector car auction in Kissimmee, Florida.

The previous record was held by a 1967 Shelby GT500 that sold for $2.2 million at Mecum's Kissimmee auction last year.

After the auction, the current owner, who had consigned the car to Mecum for the sale, told CNN he was happy with the result.

"This didn't have anything to do with money," said Sean Kiernan, whose late father Robert Kiernan purchased the car for $3,500 in 1974. "It had to do with breaking records and we did that..."

$3.7 million PLUS Mecum auction seller's premium of 8% which is $296,000. The buyer's premium is only 3% which adds #111,000. plus any tax to the purchase price.

When the previous generation Mustang did a Bullitt edition, we had a waiting line. With this generation of the Mustang, the Bullitt edition has been a dud and every person that says "no" points to the wheels and says "those aren't Bullitt wheels".

Trivia: The desired vehicle for the movie was the GT500KR but they discovered it was too nose heavy for the jumps, so they quickly scrambled to get another supply of Mustangs. Yes, plural, there were several used in the movie.

Trivia: McQueen's Mustangs had the 390 V8 which apparently makes Richard Hammond believe that there was a Mustang GT 390 model. #Nope There were GTs with 390s but no such thing as a GT 390.

We've redone several fastbacks as Bullitts and they sell quickly.

At least Ford had the balls to keep the Bullitt manual only, and not pander to the wannabes. That is probably keeping more away.

They need to offer it with the excellent 10 speed automatic which is superior to the manual. The tranny in the GT500 is also quite nice.

A Ferrari 250 GTO will always keep its value as will other significant cars from history. I am not sure being a movie car will keep this value going after those who saw the film in its day are dead.
