Aston Martin's 542HP DBX Protoype Gets Run Through The Paces And It Is Going To Be A Beast
Ah, you spotted the litter of sponsor decals, though they’re really more of a distraction than a disguise. Aston’s reminder that it’s not yet the finished article. I’m in Oman driving the DBX. The two are a good match – or rather Oman’s a good place to test Aston’s new SUV. The minor roads aren’t paved, sometimes aren’t even there. River beds sometimes serve the purpose. Where there is tarmac sometimes it’s beautiful, sometimes it’s in the process of crumbling back into rock.

Normally in an Aston Martin, off-road equals end of the road.

For $206,000 U.S., the Aston had better haul its junk swiftly using the transplanted Mercedes Benz drive train. It's really a pricey Frankenstein Aston.

It needed to $106K for it to be of any sustaining value to Aston.

It needs to do 4,000+ units a year. Not a bad target for a worldwide units sales figure. I think the goal is 2,000 units in 2020 and 4,000 in 2021. The install base of current clients should provide an easy path to capture sales from other brands.

Regardless of what Mercedes tech they have, it is still an unreliable Aston Martin with a straight down depreciation curve, as in if you are dumb enough to pay $204,000 for one, you should expect that Ownership day 2, means you own a $102,000 SUV that is still as unreliable as we know Aston Martin products to be and still depreciation at a faster clip than any other super premium branded product. Andy Palmer will build more than the market will buy, they will stack up on dealer lots worldwide and 10 months after the first retail delivery the demand will dry up faster than a tear in the Sahara desert, party over, DBX in mass quantities sitting unsold and the thrill of losing all that money will be for the first 2,000 buyers and all the dealers. Now that is one hell of a way to go spend easy earned money for a billionaire.

Took a tour of one in local dealer and its one fine looking SUV which cannot be said about most. High price for exclusivity however.

Why don't they ever show us the instrument panel during the 'enduro tests'?

Wonder if the "check engine" light is on or if the 'service air suspension' warning is blinking?

For that matter, maybe the IP is blank because it shorted out?

You've experienced an old Lagonda too? LOL We fabricated a new dashboard.

I LOOOOVVVE those old Lagonda's. I'd never own one (how do you parallel park one with the gigantic front and rear overhangs and terrible sight-lines?) but that design (and the design of the 1980's Lotus Esprit Turbo) was one of my favorite ones from the period.

I would NEVER in a 1,000,000 years buy one but they are cool. I have seem then at auctions from time to time and I'm amazed at how much of the interior and trunk structure seems to be fabricated out of marine plywood with leather glued onto it. Is that a thing or did I see some shoddy repairs?

Did you lose money on it once you fixed it? Did you install a Vette crate engine?

At present Aston is a $1B Pounds Sterling in debt. Big payments coming up. The DBX needs to succeed as to the 7 figure classic recreations as well as the limited run hypercars. Being a car mfg that sells its products globally is an expensive business.
