STUDY: Using WEED Affects Drivers Even When SOBER — Are They Onto Something?
It seems that regulators that have loosened up restrictions on the use of marijuana — on a state-level — may need to more closely examine its decision making. We say this as an all-new study has been published with some compelling results.

Essentially, it's been found those that use marijuana are more prone to impulsive activity, which translates into more dangerous driving habits. Obviously this isn't good.

The group consisted of "heavy marijuana users," or those who use the drug five out of seven days of the week. Interestingly, those who noted cannabis use in their early teens had a strong correlation with an increase in "rash decisions," which led to bad driving skills while using a driving simulator. This includes speeding, hitting pedestrians, crossing the center line, missing stop signs and going through red lights.

This follows on research conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which noted that states that have legalized the use of marijuana have experienced a trend of more crashes relative to other states.

Having said that, what say YOU, Spies? Do regulators NEED to better understand the true impact of WEED on drivers — sober or not?

...The number of fatal vehicle crashes in which drivers tested positive for cannabis more than doubled from 2007 to 2016, rising from 8 percent to 18 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As states legalize recreational use of marijuana, more research is needed on how
consumption affects driving safety, said Ryan Vandrey, an associate professor in the behavioral pharmacology research unit at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

"We don't fully understand the health impacts of heavy frequent cannabis use," Vandrey said...

Growing up with pot heads, I already know that weed fries the users brain. Of course, the users adamantly deny any after effects as their bodies tremble and their eyes dilate.

Having grown up with drug addicts and alcoholics, I have no use for addicts. People who smoke pot are addicts and it does rewire them. You can tell the people who are potheads when they come searching for a job. Often times they are so laid-back that they ignore all sorts of cues. Now put them behind the wheel.

Pot is not highly addicting. Far less addicting that cigarettes, alcohol, and even caffeine (my favorite vice). Obviously you should never driven under the effect of anything, but I don't think it deserves any special treatment over alcohol (my second favorite vice).

As a daily medical marijuana user (edibles only) for chronic insomnia I can attest to the accurateness of this statement. It is worth noting however that alcohol is just as bad if not worse than weed if we are to be completely honest. It's all shit but at least I'm sleeping in bed rather than while driving so for that I'm grateful...

Alcohol is not "worse". That just you using a logic fault to pretend your addiction is somehow noble.

Addict? Really when I travel to China or the US I don't use for obvious reasons and sometimes for extended periods so how is this being an "Addict" oh great one? I stop -no problem. Alcohol is way more addictive and destroys more lives than weed -factoid just like you're still an asshole!

Weed is just as addictive as alcohol and is a gateway drug.
Weed should never have been legalized until an accurate breathalyzer test was available.
Traffic fatalities are up 29 percent annually in Colorado since the legalization of pot.

"Weed affects drivers even when sober"?!? If you are high you are not sober!

You need to reread the story.

There was a significant uptick in impulsive driving behavior in those who participated in the study and admitted to using marijuana before age 16. Meaning, EVEN WHILE SOBER, their behaviors were more reckless than the control group. As of now it can't be determined if these individuals just like to live dangerously, so to speak, or if marijuana was the catalyst for these different behaviors. More studies are being conducted and are — seemingly — pointing to marijuana use in youths contributing to permanent changes that cannot be reversed.

Of course this is a highly fluid situation at the moment and one for great debate.

Wouldn't we all like to enjoy a few drinks and have Autopilot come pick us up and safely drop us off? Better yet, wouldn't you want those that are drinking to have access to a cheap and efficient transportation solution so that they don't drive.

This recent "legalizaton of weed" thing is just a disaster. It is ill-considered, government officials are treating it simplistically and the transition from "illegal weed" (i.e. drug dealers distribute and illicit farms grow it - either in secret US locations or in central america) to 'legal' is not punitive enough to shut down the 'illegal' channels.

In Canada which rushed this process, 'legal' weed industry is having a hard time getting off the ground (sales $ and tax $ realized are about 30% of what was projected) because most people still just buy it illegally.

In NYC where I live, the NYPD basically will no longer arrest any front-line drug dealer because our socialist mayor deblasio has deemed it 'unjust' that most drug dealers are non-white, its racist to arrest them.

If USA wants to legalize it, there have to be super-harsh penalties for the 'illegal' distribution chain or else legalizaton will go nowhere and just make the situation worse.

Exactly and what a total disaster it has been in Cana-duh so our SJW black-face PM could look cool to the hipsters and millennials to win votes by promising legalization. Like that was our biggest problem???

Now I have to worry about all the high drivers on the road whom moronically believe they are better drivers "high".

Wow, a lot of hate for weed on this site. I'm not a fan of it, but fully support legalization of it. Generate billions on taxes while saving billions of policing and incarceration costs. I've never seen anyone start a fight after smoking pot, but have seen this way too many times with drunk people. You also can't die from smoking flower from what I understand (but you can by vaping super concentrated amounts). On the other hand I know people personally that have died from alcoholism.

As for a gateway drug, I think that's propaganda. If you want to try something you're going to do it regardless of what people tell you. I know plenty of grown ass adults that periodically smoke and have never tried anything else.
