Tesla Is Kicking Everyones Ass And It Isn't Even Close. But Will Even THEY Fail At Getting Americans To Drive EVs In Mass?

Regulators are demanding zero-emission vehicles. And manufacturers are scrambling to provide them, spending billions on electric-car development.

Ford says a third of its vehicles will be electric by 2030. Volkswagen plans to sell a million EVs annually just two years from now. At Volvo, half its offerings will be electric by 2025. By the end of this year, most major automakers will be offering at least one EV.

Tesla sales downd 46 percent in California, their largest market. So, the answer is no, not without the government paying them to do so.

LMAO California doesn’t hold to a candle to China...Cali used to be Tesla’s largest market...China has found a new obsession in Tesla and its sales charts are about to explode

They still appear to be selling in CA despite no federal subsidy ($7500 penalty versus foreign EVs), but in way lower volumes. Most of the transport trucks I see on the freeway look like they are carrying European Teslas to ship, but I see tons of them all the time.

Tesla did NOT lower costs in response to subsidies going away in 2020, it does not appear they are concerned about sales dropping. They will probably sell all the cars they can make this year, but those sales might not be in the US.

Car4life, you are guessing wrong. Over 80 percent of EV sales in China are either to government fleets or government influenced purchases. There is also more EV competition in China.
The Chinese auto market is nearly in a recession. This is the wrong time to depend on China to bail you out.

LOL Try telling that to the Germans and Japanese who gained market share there last year and Mercedes who has been made the best selling luxury brand in the world for the 4th consecutive year thanks to China

You my friend are betting wrong, Tesla set up shop to build in a China, and will be on the fast track to growth...watch and learn

Tax on gas will be the only way to get mass adoption of BEV's in the USA. With the country $22T in debt and nobody in government who actually cares about reducing it, State level taxes on gas, booze, cigarettes and pot would bring in billions. These are called "Sin Taxes" and if people consume less and get a bit healthier because of it, that's ok too.

Tax on electrical vehicles will be unavoidable and inevitable. Also, EV's are placing crucial extra demands on the country's aging electrical grid. The EV crowd is getting away with murder right now but the government is working to shortly make them pay their fair share. No more tax credits and cheap electricity for EV buyers and owners. EV ownership will not be borne by the taxpayer every again.

Electricity is market price in most cases except for when businesses choose to subsidize it to bring in traffic. This is similar to free parking, which has a cost but the business owners bears it as an incentive for patrons.

A fair tax would be weight x miles driven for all cars going to transportation funds and a separate tax on emissions x miles going toward health funds.

When you travel outside California, Teslas are a very rare sight.

Yeah, no. There are a couple at every intersection in the DC area.

Sales statistics do not back you up. Well over 50 percent of tesla sales in the US are in CA.

I believe my own eyes over sales statistics. Also just because a vehicle is sold in CA doesn't mean it stays in CA. Many choose Fremont delivery so they get an excuse to tour the factory, then, drive back across the country.

That is a truly stupid statement. "I believe my own eyes over statistics." So you can see every street and every garage?!? Do you not believe in germs because you have not seen them?
How many, and be specific, people buy teslas in CA and then drive them to DC.

I know of a couple. Could also see used Model S that still have the white CA HOV stickers.

The only way Telsa leads is by losing more money than any other automaker. Effectively their business model is to sell dollar bills for $0.50 each. They've never made an annual profit since it was founded 16 years ago, so basically it is a fake company.

I live in CA, and while I know many people with EVs, 90% of the driving population has no desire to buy one, at least in the next few years.

I don't think they will lose money this year. There is a chance (small chance) they were profitable in 2019.

Note to author of the headline... It's 'en masse' (not "in mass").

"En masse is an adverb which has its origins in French literature."
