Jaguar I-Pace Gets Run Through The Steps And Comes Up Seriously Short On Highway Range

The Jaguar I-Pace was the first serious electric rival to the Tesla Model X, but in the real world, is it really all that it’s cracked up to be? To find out, Harry Metcalfe put one to the test for a day’s worth of driving in the UK.

Metcalfe started his journey with the battery of the I-Pace sitting at 100 per cent and the estimated range at 244 miles (392 km). Like all electric cars, however, the range displayed on the vehicle’s digital instrument cluster can fluctuate greatly depending on usage.

There's nothing wrong with EVs on public roads now. Battery and charging infrastructure is more than adequate now for large areas of the country. Yes, there are still areas that need more, and it's coming. Once most people recognize that they don't need more than 150 miles or so on a daily basis they'll see EVs as an outstanding alternative. When I switch from a PHEV to a BEV, I'll want 200 miles of range. Why? So I can easily drive from my planned retirement location to my grandkids' home without a stop to charge, regardless of weather. If it wasn't over two mountain passes, 150 miles would be more than enough. But I want that cushion.

Yes, there will always be drivers that truly need long range driving often, if not daily. Current EV technology isn't enough for them, and the ICE will still be around for quite a while. Fuel cell technology might end up being what works for them, or we may finally get that big battery breakthrough that gives 500 miles of range with under 10 minutes to charge. But I'm not holding my breath for that.

And that range gauge can fluctuate in the opposite direction as well, same as a Distance to Empty gauge in a gas car. When I drove my Passat TDI, it might show 500 miles DTE when I filled it. But with my all freeway work commute, it would actually climb as I drove, sometimes getting closer to 800 miles for the full tank of fuel. My PHEV does the same thing. I might start with 24 miles range displayed, but after driving 10 miles it might only show 7 miles of range used. I'll see that today when I drive home from work. Right now it indicates 15 miles of range, and my trip home is 14.6 miles. When I pull in the garage, it will still have 4-6 miles of range remaining.

It’s fun to use free charging at various destination points. I used a nearby Tesla charger for free at a destination shopping area just last week. Walking around while shopping and eating a relaxing lunch completely topped up my Model 3 ... for free. Thanks for the brilliant charger network, Tesla!

If range is important, buy a hybrid with a 600 or 700-mile range (50-60 mpg). Gas is pretty much free at that level of efficiency.

How can anyone compare this shit box hatchback to the Model X? Two radically different vehicles. Hey let's compare a Golf and a Suburban because they are in the same class, right?
