With The SUPER BOWL Of Automotive Advertising Around The Corner, What Should Brands CHANGE?
One thing I truly love about social media is the ability to surface things that have fallen by the wayside or were totally forgotten. In addition, it brings together niche communities together — sometimes they're downright weird but that's OK.

On Instagram there's a slew of great accounts that are automotive related. But it's not all about horsepower, stance, wheels or drifting. There's dedicated accounts for just about everything you can imagine.

There's accounts for "great" specifications, celebrating autos painted purple, and one of my favorites that I just started following only shows Ferrari vehicles without shields on the fenders. It gets nerdy quick.

If you really want a dose of nostalgia though, some of the best accounts showcase vintage automotive advertisements.

Recently, i started leafing through the posts and I found it completely fascinating. The ads were rich, creative, fun and witty. When you compare them to today's advertisements that are far more rooted in virtue signaling and corporate social responsibility, they blow them away. It's not even close.

Having said that, the Super Bowl is just around the corner, which is one of the biggest marketing events of the year. IF you were advising the marketing department of a major automaker, what would YOU tell them to change or inject into this year's multi-million dollar spots?

First, I would say that some brands need to advertise more. Genesis, I'm looking at you. Cadillac, I'm looking at you.

But more importantly, brands need to create a buzz like Lincoln did with Matthew McCawnahhhheyheyhey (now played out).

Ads don't have to demonstrate features, but they need to spark interest.

What I'm tired of are the "This Labor Day Weekend you can get $10,000 off in the base Fiesta of your dreams with another $10,000 cash back to you with 0% financing for 120 months."

Agree. Cadillac's rollout of the CT5 has been almost invisible. No media blitz and few reviews.
And there is a radio sport here in Chicago for local Chrysler/Dodge dealership that is a man yelling about all the money you will. It is earsplitting.

Truthy - Thats todays GM... the CT4 & CT5 will be tossed out there, zero marketing and then abandoned in 4 years. Heard about the new CT5-V Blackwing? They're not giving it the hand made Blackwing, they're installing the monster from the CTS-V yet are calling it CT5-Blackwing. The company is lost and confusion reigns...

Volvo has best ad/promotion tied to brand values...if a "safety" is scored Volvo will give away $1 million in cars.

So Volvo is planning to put money on the hood to prop up stagnant sales and are marketing it as some good deed?

$1 million not on hood. Its a contest you enter.

So then one, million-dollar Volvo?

Ha! Nice tie-in. If there is no safety they still get the press.
A safety has been scored in 17 percent of Super Bowls.

To enter contest you spec out Volvo to your taste and all winners get their specific car. So they will likely be giving away 14 to 18 cars for a total of $1 million if there is a safety.

I would go light on the brand and heavy on the message. Similar to what RAM did with "And God made a Farmer" spot which played during the Superbowl. An add that appeals to your better self and encourages people to be a good neighbour is alway needed. Especially today.

One of my favorites.

Show the car in the ad. I hate commercials that barely show the vehicle, or show it zooming by so fast, you can’t see it.

Don’t make it a political ad for climate change, gender/sex equality, or any other trendy bleeding heart cause

I wouldn't hold your breath.

That's been the M.O. for the past couple of years now as NY-based creative agencies are responsible...
