US Senator Says Tesla Should REBRAND Autopilot And TAKE ACTION Due To Safety Concerns — Is He RIGHT?
A US senator on Friday urged Tesla Inc to rebrand its driver assistance system Autopilot, saying it has “an inherently misleading name” and is subject to potentially dangerous misuse.

But Tesla said in a letter that it had taken steps to ensure driver engagement with the system and enhance its safety features.

The electric automaker introduced new warnings for red lights and stop signs last year “to minimize the potential risk of red light- or stop sign-running as a result of temporary driver inattention,” Tesla said in the letter...

Getting back to the thread topic - YES - Autopilot should be renamed - Maybe AutoAssist or something like that. THere are just many idiots out there who really believe the car CAN drive itself when we are not close to that. In fact - I still believe that will NOT HAPPEN except on certain Limited Access highways to begin with.

Either rename - OR - include a required signature on purchase to a Disclaimer regarding this. The fact is - it is not currently even Legal in most states to begin with

I would agree with that. The average person does not understand that autopilot in an aircraft does not exclude the pilot from responsibility to control the airplane. Same with cars, rename it to enhance cruise control or some such.

Autopilot literal definition:

"An autopilot is a system used to control the trajectory of an aircraft, marine craft or spacecraft without constant manual control by a human operator being required. Autopilots do not replace human operators, but instead they assist them in controlling the vehicle. This allows them to focus on broader aspects of operations such as monitoring the trajectory, weather and systems."
