SPIED! FIRST Pics of The Next-gen Mercedes-Benz SL Show An AMG-Developed Cruiser That Promises To Be Lighter, Faster And Better
Over the years, the once-popular Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster has seemingly fallen off the radar. As buyers move towards sport-utility vehicles or more hardcore sports cars, the boulevard cruiser seems to have become less relevant.

We're expecting this trend to continue as more focused sports cars like the C8 Chevrolet Corvette make their debut.

The three-pointed star has taken note and is course correcting, thankfully. Responding to macro market shifts, it has given the next-gen SL's development to the AMG team to oversee. This is a significant change of pace given that the SL was always developed by Mercedes-Benz and not the AMG squad.

Welp, times are a changin'.

According to reports, the SL and next-gen AMG GT will actually share the same platform. While the SL is said to remain a cruiser, it will be more dynamically engaging. Oh, and it will say "bye bye" to its folding hard-top roof — a cloth soft top will replace it.

Spotted for the first time while undergoing research & developmental testing, it's clear that the AMG GT inspiration will be strong in this SL. In fact, some of its design cues appear to carry over. Check out its prominent front grille, squinted headlights, rounded hind quarters and thin taillights.

We'll keep you posted with the latest spy shots and information, right here on AutoSpies.com!

...The images look to be taken at a top-secret development facility. While under wraps, the prototype can be seen to sport a long, sloping bonnet, prominent rear haunches and an angular front grille design. The rounded rear end is similar to that of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, which will share a platform with the SL in its next iteration.

Autocar has previously reported that the SL will receive a traditional fabric hood in place of the folding hard-top arrangement that has been used for the past two incarnations...

They can make any changes they wish, but the 2-door coupe/convertible cruiser market has pretty much died out.

Repositioning the SL as an E Class priced job that is very well equipped at base level and letting the AMGGT be the top is the move to make.

The SL currently is for old, dead people like TomM. LOL

Since when has MB ever had a vehicle that "is very well equipped at base level?"

Not gonna happen.

If you want to ensure that the SL doesn't die, a totally new approach needs to happen and using it as an attainable car with excellent value is precisely how to do it.

Mercedes' plan will fail because the SL and the AMGGT inhabit the same niche which is stupid.

I agree, I think it should be more like the Pagoda SL of the late 60's-early 70's the W113. Put wood on the dash, make it gorgeous, 2 tops, and make it aspirational but attainable. Would body colored wheels/wheel covers be to "in the past?"

Common sense, but of course people with their inane theories. +1

I will miss the hard top. Fabric one will not withstand the time as the other. I prefer the the hard one even if that means a heavier car. They should offer both options.

The hard top works for a cruiser.

For a performance-oriented car it is a death sentence.

Rather than introduce a new SL would prefer MB reintroduces AMG E63 coupe and convertible...more in tune with times and leave GT for two seater set.

I can see them offering the same type of engine options as the CLS and not create a full blown AMG version, as not to encroach on the AMG GT CONVERTIBLE. Similar to the relationship between the CLS.and AMG GT 4Dr.

Yes, that is the new approach I've noticed. Perhaps SL53 AMG?

Agent00R: I agree but the SL is not a performance car for me, for that We already have the amg gt coupe. then does no makes sense for them to change. also we have several performance cars like Ferrari and MClaren spiders with hard tops, also It should stay as anti-mother in law. Otherwise it will be another M6 Coupe (2+2) cruiser.

They are making the SL more of a performance car. I personally like the hardtop as well but it's a different hardtop structure than the McLarens and Ferraris. Those cars are almost more targa top than hardtop convertibles, which is a big difference in weight and space.

They should use hard top of CF and the transparency could be polycarbonate, that will save weight.
