Did BMW BLOW IT With The "Face" Of The All-new 4-Series? Should It Have Gone With ANOTHER Design?

Did BMW BLOW IT With The
The launch of the all-new BMW 3-Series drew sharp criticism.

It was too boring, they said. BMW's design had gone stale, others wrote. While the critics weren't wrong, I don't think anyone was prepared for what would come next.

It's safe to say that BMW has taken a bit of a walk on the wild side with the upcoming 4-Series. This is evidenced by the 4-Series Concept that has extremely large, vertical kidney grilles as well as a shape that's more akin to the Audi A5 and Infiniti Q60 coupe.

In other words, it's pretty weak.

But things took an even worse turn this week. While leaked images have shown rather hideous looks of the upcoming 4-Series and M3/M4, we were flabbergasted by what we saw from the latest leak. Likely belonging to a sporting variant of the upcominig M440i, it was the front end of the next-gen 4. Its vertical kidney grille meshing into what appears to be one large front grille.

Simply put, it's not particularly attractive or exciting. In fact, to me, it looks like a really bad impression care of Hyundai's design team.

This got me thinking: How could of BMW done the all-new 4-Series BETTER? The first thing that popped to mind was the angry-looking and drop-dead sexy 328 Hommage. In my opinion, I think it's the sexiest design study the company has produced.

Meshing the looks of the well-regarded E30 with the tall, vertical kidney grilles from BMW's early days, it's an especially unique take on what could've been.

Although the next-gen 4-Series has yet to be revealed, I've got to ask: Has BMW BLOWN IT with the all-new 4's "face" from what we can see?

The haters are going to hate it for six months, maybe a year. Then they're going to love it.

Mark my words.

You said same thing about the Lexus beak I'll bet and that never died down. You probably had the same moronic perspective on the Lexus spindle, that people still hate. Hell you probably even said the same thing about the Aztek. This new BMW face is Aztek ugly.

It's very possible, Logan, but IDK.

This is quite bad, in all honesty.

I never thought I would see the day when BMW would style their cars after a KIA.

You're slow on the uptake, there are several BMWs in production that have already reached that goal.

Chrysler Sebring in the photo, but I'm hoping the final thing will look bad ass

I know people who have seen the vehicle in person and they said it looked awesome. Don't judge the whole vehicle by the grille. It will balance out.
Everyone complains about BMW, but everyone copies it.

I hear you, however, I know folks who have seen it internally and have said it's as bad as you think it is...

This "Don't judge the whole vehicle by the grille. It will balance out." is what bed-wetting fan boys say when they know what is coming is hideous and they are afraid the brand they worship will become an embarrassment.

Yes, you're onto something, Matt.

As a fan of BMW products for quite some time, as well as buyer, I have to say I am really NOT looking forward to this incoming wave.

Frankly, the brand hasn't been meeting the mark for some time. This is just the icing on the cake.

I assumed the big kidneys on the X7 was due to the size of the vehicle. Smaller nostrils would look silly, but then the 7 Series also has them. BMW needs styling help. They ping-pong between Bangle ugly and phoned-in boredom. This new 4 series is exceptionally bad because it looks "Audi" or "Sebring".

We've seen quite enough from the spy shots and now this reveal. Let me put this in the most obvious economic terms for BMW - I'm in the market for a new coupe, but I would not even consider the 4 series based on this ugly design.

For now, it's the 2 (until they uglify that with the next gen). I like the look of the 8, but I would save $100K and just get a Mustang instead. Other possibilities are the A5/S5, a Mercedes or Porsche. It's probably time for a midlife crisis and a used Porsche. My current BMW can be the winter beater.

I agree.

If the new M3/M4 drives like a Ferrari, I still wouldn't want to be caught dead in it.

Design that is dramatically different than the previous generation can be a good thing (Mercedes-Benz) or a really bad thing (Lexus). Lexus saw the impacts of its massive grille on its sales, which have not kept up with its German competitors in the U.S. (Lexus has never been competitive globally).

Design that stays stagnant is also terrible for sales, which Audi can attest to. The lesson is make dramatic design differences that people want.

You make a good point but I think the caveat is it has to be GOOD, new and dramatic design.

How about we wait to see the final production version before we fly off the handle like a woman?

I sort of hear what you're saying Carlos but it's clear as day what this vehicle's going to look like.

And it ain't good...

Carlos, I don't know why you would assume the final version is going to be "dramatically" different. The pictures we're seeing are the production styling.
Is there some last minute magic wand??

Making a decision to spend my money on a car that looks good is not flying off the handle like a woman, although that is a remarkably stupid, sexist comment.

Calm the hell down, it was a joke.

I hated the 4 series concept just like everyone else, but this is spy shot is less offensive to me and I'll reserve judgement until I can see the whole thing.

I just dont know why they gotta go so far deep into the future??
it would have been amazing if they took a page out of Ferrari's book with what they did with the "Roma" and gone kinda classic/ retro and maybe brough back some e30/e46 rather than go this mainstream obnoxious route.

Having looked at this in other photos it seems like they've pretty much copied the 2013 A5.
