IF Tesla Reinvented The Steering Wheel, Would YOU Like Its Changes? Learn ALL About Them HERE!
When it comes to innovation, we know that Tesla knows how to push boundaries. So, it's no surprise that the electric vehicle manufacturer is possibly considering changing one of the most traditional elements of an automobile.

That would be its steering wheel.

According to a report from Electrek, Tesla filed a patent for all-new steering wheel technology. In it, the company describes how it would leverage steering wheel-operated touchscreens, gesture control and haptic feedback to control the vehicle and its respective features.

For those of you that haven't driven Tesla products, they leverage a Mercedes-Benz-sourced column shifter. In the diagrams, it appears that Tesla is proposing moving that to the six o'clock position on the steering wheel.

Having used steering wheel-mounted touch pads to control the instrument panel and infotainment displays in the latest Mercedes-Benz vehicles, I can attest to the fact it's pretty intuitive. You just have to get used to it. A slight learning curve.

The same can be said of Ferrari and Lamborghini's addition of buttons and switchgear to their vehicles' steering wheels. In my opinion, it's actually the way all vehicles should be set up.

That way, drivers' keep their hands on steering wheels more often than not.

So, we've got to wonder: IF Tesla reinvents the steering wheel, would YOU be down for these changes? What say you?

Tesla wants to reinvent the wheel… the steering wheel, that is. The automaker is working on a new steering wheel-based user interface with a bunch of new features, including one replacing the gear stalk, a bunch of touchscreens, haptic feedback, and more, according to a new patent filing.

In order to change gear on a Tesla vehicle, you use a gear stalk attached to the steering wheel, which is uncommon in passenger vehicles other than trucks.

Now it looks like Tesla might be going a step further by removing the gear stalk altogether.

Tesla has filed a new patent for a new steering wheel-based user interface that includes touchscreens on each side and one at the bottom, which replaces the gear stalk, according to the images in the patent filing, as shown above...

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I read most of the patent doc and there are a lot of great ideas in there. I'm still not clear on how the turn signals would work without stalks, but the concept seems way more versatile than the current click wheels on the 3/Y/future cars.

I like how you can change "apps" by double clicking and hovering in different areas. That lets you control climate, audio, and the phone using just your left hand while the autopilot functions are mapped to the right.

Might be too big of a change for a lot of consumers, would love to test it out and see how it works in practicality.

I'm in favor of any technology that reduces the chance of my wife plowing into the side of the garage, or backing into one of our other cars in the driveway.

Placing P R N D on the wheel seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Bingo. Dumbest idea ever. I suppose software could be intelligent enough to override your choice. But this is just a really bad spot for such an important function.

Software does that already. For example, while driving over 5mph you can't shift into reverse or park. If you open the door while your Tesla is in D or R and the pressure sensor detects you are getting out, it shifts into P automatically.

So in essence while you're driving you really can't shift into anything else (even neutral is disabled), that is already the current design.

My problem is that it is on the bottom steering wheel spoke which is less convenient than a shifter by your right hand.

1958 Edsel had PRNDL push buttons in the center on the steering wheel. Old idea, offered for 1 year only.

Another example of change for change sake not because it is needed or demanded by consumers.

And that is 100% what Tesla is about. Example: farting Teslas.

Apple did that too, no one asked for an iPod, iPhone, or iPad. Sometimes consumers don't know what they want until they see it, has to be a balance between customer feature requests and blank sheet innovation.

Tesla should invent the square steering wheel and leave it at that.
Tesla would do better if they invent a better fire extinguisher.

Whatever they do, it will be on all other cars before too long.

Tesla invented the automobile. A subsidiary was sold off. That became Mercedes Benz. #Not Fake News !!!
