Your Headlights Suck: IIHS Limits Safety Awards Due To Poor Headlight Performance

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety continues to add requirements to qualify for the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards, as the overall number of vehicle models awarded rises.

IIHS said vehicles must have "good" or "acceptable" headlights as standard equipment to qualify for the 2020 Top Safety Pick+ award. Headlights rated "good" or "acceptable" may be optional for the Top Safety Pick award, the institute said. Vehicles must also offer "advanced" or "superior" front-crash prevention technology to win either award.

It bugs me when DRLs are not the same shade of white as the headlight. Or worse, white led DRLs with halogen headlights. Shows a lack of attention to detail.

I'm tired of the DRL styling bullshit.

Lights on cars are terrible and overdriving them is easy.

At one time this was not an issue - ALL headlights were the same - and cheap and easy to replace as well. Today - get a crack in the plastic and a headlight assembly can cost hundreds to thousands - all for the "better" light bulbs that apparently are not better after all.

Maybe the government should threaten to go back to a single type of approved headlight assembly - and that would get the manufacturers to fix the problems

There’s an answer. More government regulation. That always works.
