This law gives special treatment to illegals who are guilty of an international crime: it is illegal to enter a country without papers. This law discriminates against legal citizens. This is unequal protection under the law and not only does it violate civil rights laws, it violates The Constitution.

Not all of them @xuj1987a. One city council, in one state in the entire union made this decision. Stay positive and centered. The law is very odd and may be repealed now that it has made the national news.

The funniest part of all of this discussion is American posters complaining when you already know States and apparently US Cities have very broad powers under the US Constitution. This city in Mass is quite within its rights to make this crazy law even if you don't like it. Stomp your feet as much as you like.

Meanwhile in Canada, we have a Provincial (State) level Highway Traffic Act. No city has the power to change it. Everyone has to follow it and everyone would get arrested or fined for a violation. No exceptions whatsoever. As well, cities are said to be "creatures" of the Province and it retains the power to amalgamate them, wipe them off the map and or change anything about them they want.

This law could never be passed in Canada and likely the UK and many other Commonwealth Countries with a Parliamentary system of Government.

I'm actually not sure this is legal CC. Borders and immigration are Federal issues and the last Admin was all about illegals and flying them all over the nation planting them in areas where they might vote some day. So you have one pathetic loser as a president who allows this type of behavior and you have another awesome President who upholds the laws (part of the oath of office). So Sanctuary cities, this crap in Mass, etc... is rogue behavior that needs to be nipped in the bud... I expect it will once President Trump destroys the next DemoRat Chump candidate...

But I really doubt the whole city council would have voted in favour of this and have it approved by the Mayor, head of the Legal department etc. There are too many checks, balances and liability issues for this to just be a fluff vote. It's real. And because of State and City rights, no President will be able to do much about it unless you change your Constitution somehow or if pressure by the citizen of Cambridge push to have it changed one day. It is a strange one that is for sure...
