#GIMS: SKETCHED OUT! The All-new Volkswagen Golf GTI Is Seen For The FIRST Time. You Feeling It?
The 2020 Geneva Motor Show (GIMS) is just around the corner. We're merely a week and change away from one of the year's biggest automotive events.

While there's a rather lengthy list of cars that will debut, I am particularly excited for the all-new, Mark 8 Volkswagen Golf GTI. Why, you ask? Well, several reasons.

Primarily, it will boast an updated engine good for just over 240 horsepower from its forced-induction, four-cylinder engine. Additionally, as seen with the standard MK8 Golf, it will make use of two 10-inch displays — one serves as its instrument panel, the other for infotainment.

Although we've seen spy shots that give us a rough idea of its exterior design, we're chomping at the bit to see more. Well, thanks to VW, we can do that now.

For your FIRST look at the MK8 Golf GTI, see VW's sketch, below.

The new Golf is pretty terrible looking and it just gets worse.

The new 8th generation GTI is a winner for VW. It embodies all the traditions of German engineering and craftsmanship at affordable price points. It "defies" the laws of physics by being small on the outside but spacious inside. It is a compact "SUV style" vehicle that drives like a sports car.

But the Golf didn't sell unless there was a lot of money on the hood and even then, the take rate was abysmal.

The GTI is a small niche and not the volume car VW desperately needs.

This will be $40K of #WTF went wrong.

Matt — true in the US but not abroad.

Abroad is irrelevant to me. Couldn't care less. Hell abroad buy French cars (ick) but that does not make them good cars.

Can't wait to see this version of the Golf 8 - one of the worlds best selling nameplates and in the GTi/R versions, on the enthusiasts Top Ten list year after year!

Until VW reliability and repair costs come down substantially - I would not spend a dime on what they offer unless they have a lifetime (my lifetime) warranty.

I wish they'd bring back the 2-door Hatch GTI. Then I might be interested. Not sure if it still exists globally, but hasn't been in the US for years. The 5-door hatch just looks dowdy though the front end looks good on this new one.

As soon as they offered the 5 door, it overwhelmingly outsold the 3 door. There is just no reason to go back especially with (1) and tiny the sales were of the 3 door and (3) how much of a sales disaster the Golf/GTI is relative to the Civic and Corolla.

Well-The question still is this. Golf sales in general have tanked in the US. That is why the base Golf is no longer going to be offered here. Golf R sales are a tiny fraction and GTI sales have not been that much better. There is frankly a fair degree of competition. To my eyes most if not all the competition has much better design language than a Golf. Their interior quality is close to Audi standards. But what hurts the Golf is that it still looks like a 15 to 20 grand economy car from the outside. The newest version is really just the slightest design revision of the previous generation. The logical thing for VW to do is to either send us a Golf on a raised platform with SUV/CUV plastic cladding with available AWD or simply stop importing it altogether and replace it with a small CUV. The only regular car like vehicles should be Jetta, Passat, and Arteon.
