Tesla Cybertruck To Be American Made Somewhere In The Central US
esla CEO Elon Musk announced today that Tesla has started scouting locations for Cybertruck production and plans to build the truck in “central USA.”

Previously, Musk suggested that Tesla was looking into Texas for a factory.  At the time he did not specify that it would be for Cybertruck production, but these two ideas would line up.

This is the first clear indication we’ve had of where the Cybertruck will be built. Previously it was an open question whether Tesla would try to build the car in their Fremont factory, which has been their main location for final assembly since the company began volume production.

Christ most of this could be made on a simple brake press.

I think that's partly the point. How else can you get a massive long-range 6 person EV truck for $39k.

So why does Tesla have the Fremont plant and instead of using its capacity, it builds cars in a tent in the parking lot?

I've done a couple tours there, the interior space looked fully utilized after they built the original Model 3 line (which was massive). There are huge parking lots outside, I can't understand why they wouldn't build a massive structure and expand on the lots. Or even better, build a loop tunnel from the nearby BART station and kill all the parking lots.

I'm pretty confused as to where they put the Y line. If you look at the photos of the 1 millionth Tesla, it's a Model Y and it looks like it is coming out of a tent. BTW, my car was an early tent-built model and it ended up being higher quality than the 3s coming off the fancy $2B line. Did they build a second tent for the Y? Guess we'll find out in the next investor meeting. They can build 3,500 Ys a week right now at max capacity, but they are probably doing 1k/week.

Fact #1: You WORK FOR TESLA

Fact #2: Fremont has a production capacity greater than the number of cars that Tesla is building inside the factory, thus they are squandering production space.

#1 - Nope

#2 - Max output when the plant was NUMMI was 428,633 cars. Tesla built 367,500 cars last year, so I think you're right. The S and X lines I'm sure are not running at full capacity. From the last investor newsletter, 2020 maximum output is 490,000 cars, 90k S/X across 2 lines and 400k 3/Y across 3 lines. If the S/X were repurposed they could make way more cars there, but those are going to supply those two models for the entire world. Future factories will only be 3/Y/CyberTruck.

The new Gigafactory will also build the Y for the east coast, so it will have at least two lines. I guess they really are forecasting that the Y will outsell all their other cars combined to have two full Y lines in the US. Sounds like Texas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan are all in the running.
