First Model Y Deliveries Take Place And It Seems Like It Is A Hit

With Tesla Model Y deliveries now starting, the first in-depth reviews of the all-electric crossover have surfaced. These reviews and walkthroughs of the Model Y show that the vehicle is very much like the Model 3, if the all-electric sedan’s utility and practicality were raised to 11. A lot of this has to do with the Y’s driving modes, its storage space, and its spacious interior.

The Model 3 is not a small car by any means, but it is a midsize sedan. It’s a stunning car that beats premium rivals like the BMW 3-Series in terms of performance, but it does lack some points in terms of utility compared to say, Tesla’s flagship sedan, the Model S. The Model 3 has 15 cubic feet of cargo space, which is great for its class, but it is far smaller than the 66 cubic feet of cargo space in a 5-seater Model Y.

It’s bad enough having Tesla reliability, less a first year of a Tesla model, less one of the first of a new Tesla model off the line.

On the other hand, it holds a lot of carry on bags.

More features are leaking out that were never mentioned from these reviews:

- It's the first Tesla with a heat pump, could improve range dramatically in cold weather.
- The rear seats recline!
- Two hidden compartments in the trunk, Tesla added 2 cubic feet of storage since the prototype.
- Can drop the rear seats from the trunk.

That’s amazing. It has features virtually every other SUV has.

2 trunks, one with two secret compartments? 68 cubic feet of storage on a compact SUV? A similar-sized RAV4 has 37.5 cubic feet to put it in perspective.

Why not make a proper size SUV with a box ass rather than these "bars of soap" design? Many gas hogging SUV drivers might be game and pull the trigger. I would if one existed as it would allow me to use the HOV lanes around Toronto which is the most congested city in NA now and only getting worse"

Agree. It lacks in Utility. Tesla should just make two versions. An SUV coupe and a regular SUV. Would cost virtually nothing to do.

Don't worry, Coronavirus will take care of that traffic for you just like it did in the Bay Area. I never thought I would say this, but I miss the traffic (and miss going to the office).

@jeffgal, the next step up will be the Cybertruck with seating for 6 and 100 cubic feet of storage and up to 500 miles of range. That should meet everyone's needs that can handle owning a car with polarizing aesthetics.

Kinda with QEW on this. Just raise the rear and make a practical CUV instead of a high roofed car. I think this would be more in line with expectations of a CUV buyer.

Does it have a shade for that giant glass roof? If not, folks are gonna bake under the hot sun! Tinted UV glass is not enough when it's over 100 degrees out. Also I want to see how the 3rd row is going to be. It seems there's not a whole lot of room for that 3rd row.

There is no need, the S and 3 already have similar roofs and heat/glare is a non issue. 99% of heat and 95% of light are blocked.

The 3rd row I don't think will be for adults, but should be larger than the 3rd row on the Model S.

I like cars from a manufacturer that does not believe in rigorous prototype testing, but Tesla ain't it.

The Y is coming in at a similar quality level of the 2019 Model 3s based on the video reviews so far, no panel gaps. Powertrain and overall tech should be rock solid given it is the same as the 3.

If there are no panel gaps, how to do the doors open?

There has not been any miracle heat rejection glass that can protect from 100+ degree heat. Tesla forums are rife with complaints about the heat coming through the overhead glass. That's why I was surprised there's no retractable shade to cover the overhead glass. I guess you can always tint it aftermarket and then get a snap in place screen aftermarket.

You know what, I forgot the S does have an optional sunshade. I'm sure the Y will have something similar since it is about the same size: https://shop.tesla.com/product/model-s-fixed-glass-roof-sunshade
