DRIVEN + VIDEO: Learn ALL About The All-new Tesla Model Y — Right HERE, Right Now!
Over the past week or so, the Tesla Model Y has landed in customer hands. This is a pretty big deal.

Why?

The Model Y follows up on the very successful Model 3 in a sport-utility vehicle form factor. And as we've been reporting for quite some time now, buyers are not seeking out sedans any longer. Sure, the high volume vehicles still sell a helluva lot of vehicles but it's not like it used to be.

Also keep in mind: The Model Y has a nice backlog of orders for Tesla. Of course now is when the automaker has to shut its factory down due to coronavirus but — as is every other business — we're hoping this macroeconomic event ends sooner rather than later.

So, what's the Model Y really like? How is it different over the Model X and Model 3? See for yourself, below.

It's going to sell in huge numbers... Once they can make them again.

Might become the best selling car globally in a couple years.

Making it a proper SUV/CUV with a boxy ass for cargo would be money in the bank and worthy of another sub model with minimal tooling. Some people still need to haul lots of stuff and are not fans of the slippery bar of soap design language that limits the "Utility".

Hard time picturing how anyone could sit in a 3rd row seat unless they were under 4'2" or had no head.

The shape of the the roof is dead wrong for its mission.

You're not wrong but it also has to balance a nice coefficient of drag...

No it doesn't! It could give up aero for utility and styling considerations. The Citroen DS and SM were aerodynamic, but they looked like anal suppositories. The Model Y looks ungainly. Having a flat roof out to a vertical tail would have made it absolutely the right move. Instead. they perpetuated the totally wrong form factor of the Model X and in both cases the result is one of ugliness.

It's way smaller than the Model X, so I don't see how that 3rd row is going to be useful except for the smallest of kids. I wish they'd get rid of the falcon doors on the Model X and make a conventional 3 row SUV with real room for passengers in the 3rd row.

The third row is decidedly dumb.

I think this has the potential to take over the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV. At the same price and made for the masses; this will be a success.

Comparably equipped the Model Y will likely be 2X the cost of a RAV-RV.

It'll get down to $44k for 250 miles of range and exceptional performance. Something you won't find in a Rav4. It also has double the amount of storage space as a Rav4 and a lower cost of ownership (no maintenance for 4 years, electricity cheaper than gas for now).

$44k in a RAV4 is posh (it tops out less than that) whereas $44K in a Tesla is austere.

Yeah, I'd never pay $44k for a RAV4. That's insane. The RAV4 is a $30k vehicle tops. Problem is, the Model Y has an inferior interior even to a $30k Subaru.

I think most people would prefer the Model Y interior and features, we'll see if the sales show that. Should see Rav4 sales drop as the Model Y ramps up, even though the Y is more of a X3 competitor. The Rav4 hit 448,068 sales last year. The Y might be able to get there in 2021, but for sure by 2022 with 4 Gigafactories producing the car.

Also, performance tests are starting to come out for the Model Y. Tesla sandbagged the performance figures. It's already doing 0-60 in 3.3 and 3.4 seconds and they are holding back in the 0-30 mph range. A software update could take it to the low 3s.

I don’t think any Tesla are luxury car competitors just because they are priced the same. I believe what Tesla wants to be the next Toyota of EVs. Besides nice infotainments they don’t have nothing luxurious about them. Yes, they are the “Must have” EV right now due to basically no real competition. No other company have been able to match their range and performance for the price but they are coming. Elon never wanted to build an “luxury “ EV, he wanted an EV for the masses. They are the best EV out there no doubt about it.

I always thought of Tesla as a premium brand vs. luxury. Lexus I think of luxury, and I have owned two in the past. I think the current gen seats on all the Teslas are more comfortable than any of the non-lux brands (and BMW/Audi to be honest), the performance is obviously a step above the standard brands, and the tech is hard to beat at any level. No other brand is giving you a full 3d visualization of the world around you with stoplights and stop signs, I don't believe any other car has video games, Netflix, and dare I say... a really funny fart app. That stupid app has likely sold more cars than you would believe.

They also have the best charging infrastructure by far... Teslas can use any charging system around the world, but only Teslas have access to Superchargers and Destination Chargers. Right now there are 168,000 gas stations in the US and dropping. Charging stations are up to 80,000 and rising fast (20,000 in CA, double the number of CA gas stations).

The acceleration figures touted by Tesla are fake because they are not repeatable. Run their cars more than a couple of times hard and watch those accel numbers massively increase lol.

What you said is utterly false. You can floor it all day long and really won't see any significant impact on acceleration until the battery is below 20%. Tesla is known for understating 0-60 numbers. They rated the Model Y at 3.5 seconds, but everyone is getting 3.3-3.4 seconds.
