STUDY: You May Want To THINK TWICE Before Using Android Auto Or Apple CarPlay...
In-car technology has exploded in recent years. Not only has it become more prevalent and trickled down to even economy cars, it's also being implemented in a multitude of different ways.

Now, you can interact with your vehicle's tech through buttons, voice, gestures and mobile-friendly software (e.g., Android Auto and Apple CarPlay).

As with all good things, there's a drawback, however. Ever since tech has pervaded our vehicle's cabins, there's been an outcry that it was actually overwhelming average drivers. I can understand why. The reality is, some people are easily distracted.

The problem with that assessment is it was anecdotal. Well, until now.

The UK's largest road safety charity, IAM RoadSmart, conducted research comparing how driver's reaction times vary from the drinking and driving limit to cannabis usage to utilizing Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The results *MAY* shock you.

If the data is to be believed, it's pretty clear that technology are making for less safe drivers. Are we heading in the WRONG direction as it relates to tech or does it just need to be implemented more intuitively?

I do find AppleCarPlay very distracting - too many occasions to take my eyes off the road.

agreed. when you got these huge digital screens displaying a ton of information, any descent driver will become a little distracted over time.

with the newer maps services, drivers are fed traffic weather, directions, & then their local list of eateries with Yelp scores. Not distracted enough? Trying switching to the music app & selecting the perfect score for that drive to the coffee shop...no wait the gym...or maybe just to that new club across town. Btw, how's the traffic?

Driving and in-car entertainment do not mix. Moving through menus is a disaster when you are driving. Wrong on so many levels but nobody will do anything about it. Sheep following the one in front off the cliff.

It scares me how many people I've seen going 70mph on the 405 texting. Then the people poking at a screen with their eyes off the road truly makes me wonder how people can be so morally irresponsible.

About 90% of the time, I come to Autospies for the comments and not the articles. I did not read this article but all off the comments have merit.

Just my opinion: I would be okay going back to an analog AM radio. Volume to the left of the dial. Tuning to the right of the dial. Push buttons under the dial. Spice things up with a spring loaded reverb and speakers in the back.

On my commute to Newport Beach this week, I took the Interceptor with its knob radio. It was absolutely glorious being tech-free and just driving. Fortunately, the Governor called ahead and told the traffic to stay out of my way. Blissful driving.
