The Right Move? Detroit Basing It's Recovery On SUVs And Crossover And Leaves EVs To Tesla
General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. have widely touted their commitment to emission-free electric vehicles, but their production plans show a growing reliance on ever-larger gas-powered vehicles.

The two biggest U.S. automakers will make more than 5 million SUVs and pickup trucks in 2026, but only about 320,000 electric vehicles, according to detailed production plans for North America seen by Reuters.

That will be about 5 percent of their combined vehicle production in North America, but less than Tesla Inc., the world leader in EVs, produced last year.

Short term gain, long term pain. This has been the credo of the big three for years and reason for their decline. I get it more than ever now because of the current crisis but their past actions put them in this capital strained position.

They're in survival mode right now. They have to keep the lights on if they are going to be making anything.

GM and FCA are definitely in survival mode. Ford is close but not there yet.

Of course it is the right move, they are just supplying the demand. Not necessarily leaving EVs to Tesla, the EV demand is just very little. I am sure it will increase as battery technologies improve as well as price...

And it appears that they are not going to be like the Germans and arrive to market with EVs that are overpriced even by EV standards that have embarrassingly short ranges.

I sincerely believe that the Taycan is better engineered than any Tesla and that it's batteries are better managed, BUT they needed to do all of that AND meet or beat Tesla's range.

Other car makers have try EV and no sales. The EU based car manufacturers are under almost orders to make EVs from their liberal governments even if they do not want to.

Once this crisis has passed, the EU will begin to break apart. National Borders will reappear and unfortunately probably some old animosities. The Italians feel very abandoned by the EU.

I'm very excited about the Mach E. Granted, I couldn't drive it to Newport Beach and back in a day...

Horrible move. They are planning to make the same number of EVs in 2026 as Tesla made in 2019. If they don't change their plans, they are seriously f***ed.

After Ford sees how will the Mach-E will sell, I think they will change their tune.
