Agent 009 - Yes you are correct that the current supplies and production of Ventilators was geared toward the need BEFORE the pandemic - and market forces being what they were - we really did not have major capacity to greatly increase production - because that is how the American Economy works - supply and demand. Hospitals were merging and combining at a rapid pace before this year- leaving lots of used supplies as they closed Hospitals all over the country.

However -Ventilators do not really have a QUICK shelf life (Many are still working after 20 years) - My company both repairs them - and Re-manufactures them for sale as well as selling new ones. THe only "new" ones we produced were for a special use for a single(Admittedly huge) customer until this February. And though We bought up lots of cores to be rebuilt - the fact is - I had almost a 7 year supply of them - and I would not have kept that many if I had not bought them at an advantageous price.

Gm, Ford, and FCA all were in the process of plans to produce more before Trump invoked the war powers act - but these will be a one time shot to the market - and I would expect the next few years will have very few sell - because of the glut there is going to be. And with the glut - you can expect not only poor sales after the pandemic runs its course - but also less repairs - since they will simply more on to another one from the pile of extras.

However - on average - there is about 160 parts in today's Ventilators - that come from 14 different countries - most parts are not even produced in the USA - and in order to ramp up production for them - you will need to "create" relationships with lots of corporations outside the USA - a lot of them in China - and If you do not have the good relationship - you won't get the parts because they can sell them elsewhere right now. Trumps tirades on the CHINESE VIRUS will be an obstacle that money might not overcome - for instance.

My biggest concern never mentioned - is large portions of the Upper Northwest have not only a severe shortage of Medical Facilities - but it is not unusual for towns to have built a Hospital - but they don't have a doctor in the town. The shortage of medical personnel - related directly to earnings (Which are low because of fewer patients on Private Insurance policies) - Doctors often cannot pay off their College Loans with the Money they can make in these areas. In a pandemic - this is death sentence to a lot of people if the virus gets there.

The ventilator reserves are for normal situations not a pandemic. They have a shelf life. The protective masks were depleted in 2009 in the H1H1 outbreak. The Obama administration never replenished them. BUT neither did the Trump Administration. In both case health officials should have made a stand to persuade action.

This is just my opinion, but companies fear public humiliation and ridicule on social media more than a newspaper story or local news piece. Because it has a was of damaging their image if it goes viral. So these companies go into panic and action mode QUICKER, than if some magazine publishes a story.
