Is THIS The Next KILLER APP Coming From Tesla?
When I saw the Tesla Cybertruck for the first time and looked at the pickup bed cover I said it looks like that would be a great application for a solar panel.

Well, I guess my hunch was right because it looks like Tesla is about to up the solar synergy on its cars, truck and SUV.

Guys! Please! A solar panel on a vehicle would only give enough juice to keep the battery charged while parked at an airport....and only if parked outside! Simply not enough area to do anything more.

On the Cybertruck, it will be ~15 miles per day of free charging.

That is more than enough to keep you very comfortable while camping (ac/heat/cooking/watching movies/playing games/etc) or just give you some nice extra range if you don't drive very much. At minimum there will be 0 vampire drain, can leave the car outside indefinitely while keeping it fully charged.

Even if it makes no financial sense, I would want to get this option for some bonus peace of mind as the truck will probably be parked outside all the time.

Maybe, under an absolute perfect scenario. But on most days you'll be lucky to see more than a mile or two. The panels have to be aligned with the sun in the most advantageous way to get the maximum benefit, something that can't be done with a surface that is almost horizontal. Any sort of shading as the sun moves across the sky further reduces it's capacity. While in motion, it will be constantly changing it's view of the sun, along with all the shading that will occur as you move. Sorry, I can't see this providing any real world benefit compared to its cost.

We'll see, if there is one company that knows both EVs and Solar, it's Tesla. The cover will be at an angle and who the heck knows, maybe the car will be able to automatically re-park itself to get a better angle two years from now. If summon and reverse summon (self-park) are solid, this should be easy to code as an option.

I like the expanding panel idea, but have no idea how Tesla would pull it off with the truck design. The panels are designed to replace the automatic tonneau cover on the rear.

Now they just need those expanding solar panels like NASA builds for it's satellites... although a bit more robust with gravity, wind etc... stressing them.

Tesla can start by putting solar canopies at all of the Supercharger stations, would double for keeping the cars out of the elements while charging.
