Ford Petitions Federal Government For New "Cash For Clunkers" Program

Ford Petitions Federal Government For New

After March auto sales tanked due to the pandemic, Ford today became the first automaker to propose a government stimulus program for the auto industry. One approach would be a “Cash For Clunkers” program based on the 2009 stimulus measure.

In October, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) proposed the very same thing: a plan to help vehicle sales by granting consumers as much as $5,000 to trade in a fuel-thirsty gas car for a low- or zero-emissions vehicle.

The Democrats love welfare, so this will get their #1 priority. I say that if they are going to do this that the consumer MUST be 100% free to choose whichever vehicle s/he decides. The bullshittery of social engineering through forced choice is immoral which is why Schumer's plan was so offensive.

It's done all the time by the government from both sides of the aisle. Whether it is cheap business loans because we value small businesses to mortgage interest deductions because we value home ownership or move to clean cars because we value an inhabitable planet.

Everyone loves welfare when things hit the fan. We haven't gone one full month into this and everyone, companies and people alike, are raising their hands looking for help. I remember this program out of the recession and for some reason it feels like the consumer is different this time. Maybe it makes more sense to jump into programs like this if we are still in this position in 6 months. With a health issue, no one is leaving their house and I don't think people are going to rush to trade in their older cars for a new one if they aren't planning on leaving their house in the near futures. Interesting times regardless. Stay safe out there!

Kinda like the $1T tax break Trump gave to the corporations and the the billion class? Throwing gas on a roaring economy? Government welfare is never a good idea and should be avoided. You never know when you will really need to support people in strange times like we have today.

As much as I hate political clickbait, I hated that '09 program with an everlasting passion.

As an automotive historian, I will NEVER forgive those responsible nor the gullible idiots, for thinking a 500 SL or 535i was the same thing as a Chevy Citation. I mean, WTF?

Pre-90s cars totally vanished overnight.

Where are those 3-4 pot 2009-10 crapbuckets now anyway?

The former most definitely. I'm a relatively young engineer by profession, at 10 years experience.

I'm sure your wife is proud of her gigolo boytoy :).

My BSME, MBA, and recently defended PhD speak more than enough to my hardwork, compared to some silly incorrigble sales boy. (Ditto for my partner's BSME & MSME from MIT & Kettering)

Better get creative with that online stuff lol! ;)

Does Ford really believe that people who take advantage of 'cash for clunker' with then run right out and buy a retail new car or truck? What good is a few thousand of dollars (UP TO $5k) to purchase the richly priced new vehicles today? Just the sales tax will eat up a large portion of the "up to $5K" cash.

Probably they--like other manufacturers--either plan 0% loans or big cash to go along with it, but $5k isn't much.
