EV's. Have You EVER Seen A Product SO Unwanted By The Buying Public, No Matter HOW They Try To To Convince Customers?

EV's. Have You EVER Seen A Product SO Unwanted By The Buying Public, No Matter HOW They Try To To Convince Customers?
Let me preface this first by saying I have NOTHING against EV's. Up till now, like with most of them, they're just not for me personally.

Only ONE has ever had any interest to me and that is the Tesla Cybertruck. And I actually have one of the first deposits on one for myself.

But other than that although I appreciate the cool tech of Tesla's, I've never seen any advantage to them other than being something that shows off how much you 'care' about the world and puppies.

And I'm not alone.

And I wrote this way back in 2010 calling it and not much has changed since then. If you're honest the ev market pretty much is like fake news. And I don't see it being mainstream for at least 10-15 years. UNLESS, someone invents a battery that's 100 times the range, 1/20th of the size and weight and costs one third of the current batteries.

Up until now the media has over-hyped the 'want' for EV's like nothing else in history. Do you ever remember ANYONE in the media besides AUTO SPIES that didn't write GLOWING reviews of the Chevrolet Volt or predict it would FLOP like we did?

We called it the 'Modern Day Edsel'

But we were the ONLY major auto media site that was right.

So what do you do when you've tried everything and EV's STILL aren't selling? You make people with 'HATED' SUV's (the media's enemy) PAY THE PIPER!!!!

So what say you Spies? Is this right and is it coming here?

I could see myself in an EV if the price was lower and the range was increased

I know SUV's are the in thing but not with me. I go with what I want and not what the auto makers try to shove down your throat.

Just need the right product at the right market. The Tesla model 3 dominated it's class selling 154k vehicles, the next closest were Lexus, BMW and Mercedes at around 50k units each.

Oh come on 001. The EV world has changed hugely since 2010. Even into the early 10s, the few EVs that were available had limited range, as in under 100 miles, looked dumb (Leaf), slow charging, or just flat weren't appealing. Now, there's a significant number of EVs with over 200 miles of range, look good (e-Tron, Taycan), can rapid charge to 80% in under 30 minutes (yes, still more to gain there), and are flat out performance machines.

I'm in a PHEV now, and when my lease is up it will be either another PHEV, or more than likely a full EV. Spend any time driving them and it's tough to go back to the noise and vibration of a liquid fueled engine. And I'm a big TDI fan.

Actually - while some things have changed - the reality is - the infrastructure to support the EV at a high level has not yet appeared - and the ability to transmit enough power has not even been addressed. People talk about wind and solar installations but they still have few of them too.

Depends on what you mean by infrastructure. Public charging points are available along all major freeways and other significant roads. Almost all utilities appear to be in fine shape for home charging. There are certainly some locations that need improvements to the power grid. But with home charging adjusted to use non-peak time periods it's overall doable. Even my PHEV can be adjusted to charge at certain time periods only.

Infrastructure means that you don't have two dozen Teslas lined up waiting to charge at the Madonna Inn.

Yes. The Pontiac Aztek.

Two things are in the way of the EV:

(1) Price. They are roughly double the price of an ICE car a $25K CamCord/FusNata will cost mid $50s for a comparable Model 3.

(2) Recharge time. You can fill up a tank in 5 minutes. Not with a battery.

I don't know of a new $25k car that gets 0-60 in 3.9 seconds (which is what $50k will now get you on a Model 3. Not to mention AWD and basic Autopilot. 322 miles is also more than enough, compares well with actual gas tanks.

Stupidly illogical response "I don't know of a new $25k car that gets 0-60 in 3.9 seconds" because that is an irrelevant parameter for a family car and furthermore it does not refute my two points, which by default stand unchallenged. You also argue range when clearly the issue is recharge time.

If you have a garage your fill up time is 0 minutes, you wake up every day with a full tank and don't think twice about range. Huge value add vs an ICE car.

With virtually every competitive EV on waiting list, don't know what you're talking about. You couldn't have been more wrong.

Agreed. It's pretty obvious than in a decade most car sales will be EVs.

For sports cars it is all about emotion. Sound is a huge part of that. EVs can accelerate quickly, but that's it. So no one cross shops EVs and Lamborghinis.

Down the road I could definitely envision electric Bentleys and Rolls Royces though.

Cue SanJoseDriver saying that Tesla will let your EV make any sound you want so you can fake it.

I think the new Taycan has sound modes. It's all a bit sad. but the acceleration is real. I saw a video on the CARWOW channel on YouTube that had a Tesla P100D stay ahead of an Aventador S. Good launch was critical as it was very close. If lighter battery packs can be made, EV's will be crazy fast.

Well, you can't customize Tesla sounds yet, you can in the Taycan and it is kind of cool that they just amplified the natural sounds the electric motors make.

Please.....NO fake sounds. If your car is a sewing machine, so be it. In the meantime I'll enjoy my V8 and flat 6.
