Nissan Restructuring Will Cause It To Shed 1 Million Vehicles In Annual Sales
Nissan Motor Co Ltd’s management has become convinced the struggling automaker needs to be much smaller and a restructuring plan due out next month would likely assume a cut of 1 million cars to its annual sales target, senior company sources said.

Even before the spread of the coronavirus, Nissan’s sales and profits had been slumping and it was burning through cash, forcing it to row back on an aggressive expansion plan pursued by ousted leader Carlos Ghosn. The pandemic has only piled on urgency and pressure to renewed efforts to downsize.

They need to do a "one Nissan" like Mulally did with Ford.

There is no reason to have a Navara and a Frontier for example.

They need to shed all product overlap and consolidate redundant models Teana/Altima/Maxima. There is no need for a Versa and a Sentra.

Cars that are dead for sales (Titan, GTR, 370Z) either need to be killed or reconfigured into products that will sell radically better. Making the Z a direct competitor to the Mustang in every parameter would definitely increase sales. Repositioning the GTR into a product that picks up where the C7 Corvette left off would be good. Nissan should borrow the Ram for the Titan or just give up.

Infiniti has to go once and for all.

For the first time Matt, you actually made sense and you made your comment in a positive tone. What happened? Are you ok?

Bring back the Xterra, improve quality issues from the past 2nd generation and price it to compete. Remember, Xterras outsold FJ Cruisers by 50%.

The Xterrible as it was unaffectionately known would have to undergo a transformation that I doubt Renault is capable of. And let's not forget that Nissan is at the mercy of Renault and that Renault destroyed Nissan.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Nissan/Datsun, I have had a lot of them, from their little trucks to their huge SUVs. But I hate what they have become, bloated.

They used to inspire performance on a budget (240Z, Sentra SE-R), and now they are gutless. Plus they opted for efficient MPG (Rogue Sport) over fun (Qashqai). And they all look the same (Maxima vs Altima vs Sentra vs Versa). And don't get me started on their eunuch CVT transmissions, numb steering, and ancient QV engines.

With everything that is going on in the world and given the state of their finances, its time to go back to their roots, kill some cars, and start borrowing parts. Oh, and make Infiniti all electrics to compete with Tesla or just fold that brand.

If Nissan were mine's to run this is what I would do:

First of all I would stop making so many damn trims. Eco, sport and Lux is all you need. Save the Nismo and Rock Creek editions for truly special editions. Also, I would add mild hybrids battery power like Jeep/Ram is doing, and add more turbos across the board like Ford/Subaru have done, depending on what fits and is expedient. Lastly I would replace the CVTs with some of Renault DCT and manual transmissions.

The Versa and Kicks just need a little more power. Maybe shoehorn the 1.8 engine into the cars instead of the 1.6.
The Sentra and Rogue Sport needs the 1.6T from the old Juke for more power.
The Altima needs to go with a mild hybrid boost on the AWD versions.
And they should add the 2.0T as standard on Rogue, and add mild hybrid on AWD.
The Maxima and Murano need to go on a diet, and add mild hybrid boost on AWD versions, or just get rid of them.
The Pathfinder needs the new 3.0T and mild hybrid boost.
The Frontier is getting revised soon. Just hope it doesn't get too big like the Titan. Size isn't everything.
The Titan needs to go to the gym and just add the 3.8 v6 from the Frontier and add a mild hybrid boost, or get rid of it, especially the diesel.
Make a Z with 3.8T from the GTR (380Z).
Kill the Leaf, Armada and GTR.

Kill the Versa and Sentra and replace it with a 510 throwback.
