The END Of Jaguar? Is The Writing In The Times, SORRY, On The Wall? Would ANYONE Care?

The END Of Jaguar? Is The Writing In The Times, SORRY, On The Wall? Would ANYONE Care?
Let's face it, even before the Pandemic there were a LOT of brands and models languishing on the market.

One of them, is Jaguar.

Nothing was really selling for them and even trying to buy off the press with their media Trip to Corsica didn't work for I-Pace. WHAT a GALACTIC FLOP.

So it's no surprise that unless there is some kind of miracle for them after this all ends, things are NOT looking good for them surviving.

Big layoffs and insanely miserable sales in the first quarter, down 42% BEFORE the shutdown.

So Spies, will they survive? SHOULD they survive? And does anyone outside of dealers and employees care if they do?

I mean is there even a Jaguar you would even want or drive?

I mean even in their prime they were a hot mess. Only saved by Land Rover.

Spies, discuss.

No, I would not care. All the great Jaguar’s are the classic ones.

Hyundai should buy the Jaguar name and rechristen Genesis. The radical improvement in quality would be a boon for customers. And if German premium cars can be made in the USA, the British premium cars can be built in Korea.

I like Jaguar. Hope they make it. New XJ sounds promising.

I was just at a Jag dealership and I sat in the new Mazda XC-5. Oh, wait. That was a Jaguar.

Every one of Jaguar's models is attractive and a few are gorgeous, e.g. the F-Type. Would be a shame to see them disappear. Conversion to electric is the only potential savior for brands like Jaguar.

Yes, Jaguar will survive, the brand is too valuable not to, it will simply became part of another parent company. Wouldn’t be surprised if Daimler Benz looks at it , they are the only German manufacturer without a British brand.

While the Japanese (Toyota) know how to do upscale the Koreans do not. Given the current world situation the death blow would be if it was purchased by the Chinese. Personally think it would be a good move to become part of the new FCA/PSA Group then separated off into a specialty upscale division of Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Alfa Romeo. Emphasizing the British and Italian cultures of the brands. (Jaguar outside the F type needs to start looking like Jaguars again, not really nice Volvos).

Too valuable? Hardly!

Land Rover is the only part of the enterprise worth anything. It is unknown if all production can be moved out of the UK and the brand can still keep its authenticity. Remember that BMW and Ford tried to run Land Rover and neither could make a profit...for anyone to succeed it will have to be a bigger automaker, and all production will have to move out of the UK.

And Land Rover is a mess of overlapping and conflicting products. Someone big needs to buy Land Rover/Range Rover and put some discipline into the mix. But that will take billions to sort out.

Assuming there is a business case for LR/RR then someone could buy it, but there is no business case for Jaguar. They priced themselves too high. They did NOTHING to shore up quality control and reliability. And Callum raped them with dull, prosaic styling. Heck, even ugly styling on the XJ. Using COVID to shutter Jaguar makes a lot of sense.

Land Rover needs a crossover sized and priced like the RAV4, another sized and priced like a Telluride. In short, Land Rover needs to go down market and become much more mainstream so that Range Rover can exist as as step up.

As it its now they simply have too many models and variants of those models all priced the same to have a coherent marketing plan.

GM is in deep caca. Ditto Nissan/Mitsubishi. Mazda is hopeless.

Jaguar has made great unreliable cars in the past. Their styling has been beautiful, their interiors luxurious with all the wood. Quality and reliability are better than they used to be but still do not match the Japanese or Koreans. The big issue that Jags have today is they do not stand out style wise in either exterior or interior. I look at the exterior and interior styling of a Jaguar Mark 2 sedan and I see no heritage resemblance to XF or XJ at all. The F Types shape still looks good but the interior has no elements of an XKE in its interior. Jags today really have become neutralized. They don't really look British. They could be from any country. An Alfa (reliability aside)at least in the Giulia and Stelvio carry forward a heritage of styling both inside and out. A Jag does not. In a Mercedes, BMW and Audi there is always an evolution of exterior and interior styling. When Jag developed the XJ and the XF and XE they threw all those previous Jaguar styling elements away. Even if their reliability matched companies from the far east they would still not sell well.
