Your Best Bet? Budget Rear-Wheel Drive Only Taycan Confirmed

Just as the "entry-level" 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S reaches dealerships in the U.S. word of a less-expensive model surfaces.

Porsche R&D chief Dr. Michael Steiner told Car Magazine in a Monday interview "there will be entry-level models coming off the Taycan."

Steiner went on to say the less-expensive Taycan will be rear-wheel drive and feature a smaller battery pack. He noted that not all markets, such as China, need all-wheel drive due to more mild weather conditions.

With 600-700hp available instantly, I would make all models be all wheel drive. To be a repeat customer you need to be able to walk into the dealership vs being 6ft under.

Much less performance and range than a base Model S for a lot more money. Sounds like a real winner.

Well, real world tests are showing about 300 miles of range when driven "normally". Of course, is it possible to drive a Porsche normally for any length of time?

@running Even if it matched the Model S (1) It would be matching and old design and (2) it would still be stupidly overpriced. Porsche could have done better.

initial thought was, this front has a Toyoita Suora look about it.

As evidenced by Tesla's Q1 2020 sales report, Model S/X are dead.

I don't really see the concern about a shorter range of this Taycan. My few coworkers with EVs charge every night, and also own ICE cars which they can use for road trips. They could get by with a 100 mile EV range no problem...maybe even 50 or 75 miles, since the EVs are just used for commuting (to provide access to the HOV lane).

it's brilliant until you go on a long trip and then you're screwed.
