Audi Scrapping Plans To Make The A8 Autonomous

It would appear that Audi is giving up on introducing Level 3 autonomous technology on its current A8 flagship model, which is due for a facelift next year.

A senior Audi executive told Autonews Europe that the German carmaker simply doesn’t have enough time to make its eyes-off autonomous system compliant in the A8. Initially, Audi wanted to activate Traffic Jam Pilot for the A8 in markets where governments allowed it.

Assuming that Audi could muster the technology--I doubt it could--the A8 sells in the dozens worldwide so the ability to amortize the technology just would not be there. The A4 would be a better target because that would make it competitive in its segment where it just isn't now. My guess is that the technology is so expensive that it would price the A4 way out of its segment.

I glanced, misread, and thought that the headline read "Audi is scrapping the Anonymous A8".

If not that, then I guess it is almost as good that the are scrapping the autonomous A8.
