Do You Agree? Honda's Canadian CEO Dismisses EVs As A Leftist Political Agenda
Newly appointed Honda Canada CEO Jean Marc Leclerc is not keen on electric vehicles. In an interview with the Windsor Star, he trots out all the typical anti-EV arguments: too expensive, not practical, money-losing, and no demand.

Leclerc pays lip service to the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Apparently, he’s not opposed to rising to 100% by 2040. But Leclerc doesn’t want politicians to dictate the technology used by carmakers to achieve that goal.

Definitely a Leftist political agenda. EVs are NOT happening naturally from consumer demand. They are being forced by bribes and patently ridiculous emissions laws.

The demand would naturally be there without oil/gas incentives. $7/gallon gas would have people thinking twice about alternatives. Same if externalities were prices into the cars for dense cities.

In Canada, a lot of the political power is leftist controlled! They want EVs even when they do not perform well in -20 below temperatures. They do not care! Same as that in France and Germany!

Shut off the power = shut off the mobility of the people... comrade!

I am surprised @MD did not see through this being in the business. You sell what you have. And what you have is not good, you downplay it and promote what is good. Honda wants to sell as many Civic's, Passports and CRV's in Canada as it can. Hybrids and BEV's are not it's strong suit.

Given that you're Alt-Left, you don't understand business because to you it's Satan's tool.

"You sell what you have." No, you sell what makes money.

"And what you have is not good, you downplay it..." That would only make sense if Hondas were trash.

"Hybrids and BEV's are not it's strong suit." Hybrids and EVs are NOT big profit generators.

@MD - Honda Canada has no EV's to sell. So you can come out and say we are sorry buy your next car from someone else, or you can downplay it, it's the car after this one where it counts, so buy an ICE Honda today. It's the only card he can play. Canada is a tri-state area for sales volume, so I am not sure why they are getting a quote from this guy anyway. Maybe the upcoming GM/Honda model will be a winner, but I somehow doubt it.

This is what you say when your portfolio doesn't include a single compelling EV and your future lineup looks like crap.

It's almost like the CEO of Honda Canada is biased toward his own company's product portfolio.

EVs aren't (1) fully viable replacements to ICE yet and (2) they are a small portion of the market that is most decidedly being forced on people.

No one is forcing people to buy Teslas, and the rebates are all gone. The demand is definitely there if the product is good enough. The Mustang I'm sure will sell well even if Ford uses all of their subsidies by then.

Manufacturers in all industries will build what consumers want to buy period. If they don’t they are out of business very quickly.

EVs are Central Planner Government Mandate driven NOT Market based Consumer driven. Dealers don’t want to inventory and pay floor plan on cars that are “Nailed to the Showroom Floor” with little chance of selling them. Mechanics don’t want to work on them which require Quarantine Zones that can be up to 6 parking spaces around each car if there is a serious issue. (How many of those serious issues has Tesla had?)

Manufacturers were moving towards a type KERS system pioneered in F1 which could have a viable market driven application. Let the consumer decide what they want to buy or not buy.
