Coronavirus May Have Claimed BMW's Next Gen Sports Car

A decade ago, the then-new BMW i brand of hybrid and electric vehicles was destined to be the future of the company. But today, the brand is only known for a recent string of cancelled plans, and covid-19 reportedly just cancelled more.

German publication Manager Magazin reports, via an unnamed insider, that BMW has cancelled plans for a next-generation sequel to the current i8 coupe and roadster sports cars, which reportedly would have been based on the striking Vision M Next Concept revealed last summer.

The next i8 got cancelled because the current one is a sales disaster. It did not get cancelled because of the coronavirus If it were a good seller, there would be a successor. It's ugly and 50% overpriced as is. You don't develop a successor to a vehicle that is unloved overlooked forgotten and which sells in the dozens.

With so much physical, emotional and financial pain in the world now and more to come for sometime I can envision society looking down hard on extravagant spending for ultra high end sports cars and other nonessential luxury items. Being low key and not flashy may be safest course for uber rich.

Pug, agreed. That's what happened in 2008-2009. People were hesitant to be flashy for a while...but the consumer always comes back with a vengeance.

Aside from the ugly nostrils, the rest of the car is generic as hell and the color scheme is grotesque. This is another failure from karim Habib.
