Falling Behind? Toyota Won't Be Updating The Supra To Keep Up With The Z4

Some hardcore Toyota Supra enthusiasts are bothered that the current model doesn’t have a Toyota inline-six, largely wasn’t even developed by Toyota, and is, under the skin, mostly a BMW. And now it looks like it’s an old BMW, at that.

The Toyota Supra has many defensible merits. It was tuned by Toyota separate from BMW, and does offer a different overall driving experience compared to its cousin and organ donor, the BMW Z4. It’s a fun car! And the greatest defense of the Toyota-BMW partnership was giving enthusiasts the new low-volume sporty models they want, dividing up the costs between the partners.

Both versions are big disappointments particularly at their price points. Makes you wonder who is making product decisions at both companies and why are they not shown the door. These are expensive mistakes taking funds away from other developmental efforts.

BMW is astoundingly bad in product development. They have a ticking time bomb with the 3/5/7 sedans becoming increasingly passe as sedans. The 4 and 8 series are meh. The X5 and X7 are credible but the others are not especially great. They gave us the horrible i3 and i8. Their next "i" product is an ICE vehicle with batteries bolted in.

Toyota had one job, one halo car and couldn’t cut it, next time leave the classic alone if you are not even going to half ass it. Who hires a third party to update one of their most prized creations?

RIP Supra

Two things:

(1) There is no way in hell that BMW is going to let the Supra be equal. It's how the Germans play. Think of how Mercedes gave its sloppy seconds chassis discards for the 300/Charger/Magnum/Challenger and Crossfire instead of letting Chrysler have current designs.

(2) The Supra really isn't especially good. On the lot, it's easily $15K more than a Mustang GT and the Mustang is the better performing car. For the price of a Supra you can have a GT350 that obliterates it. Toyota dealers are still acting like Supras are in high demand and they are still marking them up, but they languish on the lot.

The GT86 and Supra need to be replaced with a Toyota "Mustang" that when equipped with a turbo 4 cylinder is a Celica and when it has a 6 cylinder or a TTV6 is a Supra. And the pricing needs to match the Mustang as well. I find it hilarious that people pay Mustang money for the wheezing GT86.

I've driven a Supra and yes it's a good car, but in no way is it great or soul-stirring.

I've learned that rather than complain just don't buy the car. Don't even let it occupy your thoughts.

Indeed because whatever is not right before the buy will only enrage you more after the buy.
