Are BMW And Cadillac Going To Have A Problem When The New Genesis GV80 Comes To Market?

The 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV was revealed last January and already it's proving to be a huge success. While the auto industry at large might be experiencing a sales slowdown due to the ongoing pandemic, this isn't the case for the South Korean luxury brand's new flagship SUV.

Speaking to Roadshow, Genesis CEO Mark Del Rosso confirmed the company has taken almost 10,000 reservations for the GV80 ahead of its market launch this summer. At the same time, Del Rosso made absolutely clear that the launch will not be affected by the virus crisis. The same goes for the heavily facilitated 2021 Genesis G80 sedan, which will also arrive in dealerships very soon. Both new vehicles are "100%" on track.

BMW? No way. Literally NO ONE is going to buy a GV80 over an X5. The GV80 is Bentiguan ugly and $30K overpriced.

Cadillac? Big problem. The GV80 is simply better than the Equinoxy feeling XT5 and the Traversey feeling XT6.

But Genesis has no marketing plan, no dealer plan, no leasing plan, so it won't sell.

Not at its current price point. it is priced way too close to the BMW. It is more expensive than the Cadillac XT6, it is technically a superior vehicle than the Cadillac rebadge job, but few will notice. If they wanted to succeed they needed to price in line with the RX350L and MDX and offer guaranteed vehicle pickup with loaner drop off for service to make up for the lackluster experience in a typical Hyundai dealership. Lexus and Acura developed their initial foothold by building the best built cars in the world, pricing well lower than the established players and offering top notch owner experience...this should be the Genesis playbook. Then they need to resist the rebadging and uninspired design/engineering which led to the slow demise of Lexus/Acura.

Acura is a sad Japanese Mercury and Lexus is totally adrift and sinking.

Yes in 2020 they are. Lexus still is moving a lot of metal with their SUVs, and Toyota has the resources to make Lexus relevant again if they chose to. When they came onto the scene in the 1990s their initial models were outstanding and they took a lot of sales from the other makes.

The LX is dead and yes the GX sells sort of, but with all the money on the hood, it's being propped up. The LQ cannot come fast enough to replace the bad GX and the truly horrible LX.

So, Acura and Lexus are still in business?

Mark Del Rosso is a bag of Narcissistic hot air, anything he says should be taken like a grain of sand, ignored. He was fired from Audi for his constant overreach and big promises with ZERO delivery. Take the Audi Etron as an example, he said they had 10's of thousands of orders, ugh sold less than 10,000 total so far. The GV80 could have been a good product, but it is contrived and ugly in production format. I believe NOTHING Del Rosso says, nothing... so the GV80 launch and sales are likely another Audi Etron disaster in the making...

The GV80 will be the product that sinks Genesis.

But what if the GV80 turns out better than a Telluride?

Dynamically it probably is, but stylistically it is hideous. There are no real Genesis dealers. There is no premium leasing strategy. And the thing is $20K overpriced. It will fail miserably.

If I recall correctly, they said the same thing about the G90 and Stinger and look where they are now. I'm sure they'll say they have 100K reservations for the new G80, too.

They're not bad products. But are they compelling enough to conquest sales from the big hitters? Likely not. I'd easily pay $75K for an optioned up X5 xdrive40i or GLE450 4Matic vs. $72K for a fully loaded GV80.

Both are victims of being priced 20% too high and completely abandoned without marketing. I've long said that the Stinger should have been aimed at the Mustang/Charger and had a V8 for $35K. Had Genesis been smart enough to give the G70 Giulia Quadrapleggio performance for half the price and without any of the Alfa Romeo's poor quality control and laughable reliability they could have gone to market with that, but NOPE.
