A New Era After Covid-19? Offroad SUV Coupes Go For Untapped Market
Is that the lava orange? a dude in a T-shirt and cap shouted at me from his Jeep Wrangler idling in a shallow riverbed outside Ojai, Calif. “How do you like it? I’ve got one on order!” The off-roader was eyeing my 2020 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupe, a $130,100 crossover with a carbon-fiber roof and cartoonishly large wheels. As I drove slowly past him through a washed-out section of road flowing

The Cayenne coupe is extremely attractive. Who knew the horrible, ungainly Cayenne could look so good? This is one sexy car.

All of these SUV coupes are the polo shirts of the truck world. The cost a lot and look nice, but you can't do any real work wearing one. Best to change into work clothes.

80% of the SUV sales are for non-working purposes this is why they are “polo shirts” . No one needs that much utility. Most of my neighbors have SUVs and fewer than 3 use them for any type of work or off-road including the owners of Land Cruisers and 4 Runners. BTW even the majority of Jeep owners don’t take their Jeeps off-road. Do you think Lexus RX buyers really need work truck capability? Buyers just want to look good driving their kids to school, at the mall or country club.

I am pretty sure you wear a Casio watch because it gives the time just as good as a Tag H.

I'm surprised we didn't hear the bull shit whine about not being able to put a crate in one. #FreeTheDog

@USA1999- I was referring more to luggage space for 4 vs the Rubicon Trail. And rightly pointed out by @MD. You can't put a decent size dog crate in these droopy backed high riding 4WD cars. I'm not even sure it could take 4 people and 4 large suitcases. Not that anyone is travelling these days...

I'm traveling all the time and much to your chagrin, the China virus hasn't gotten me. Tucumcari is lovely this time of year...less so New Jersey.

For most folks, one of these performance SUV "coupes" is in fact, a better day to day driver than some high strung sports car. And for most, the loss of performance is irrelevant since most folks are not tracking the car on a daily basis.

the SUV coupe aint new to the auto industry. see FX/QX70.

i owned a FX45 AWD and it was raw. limited rear cargo but was great on the hwy, in rain, snow, light trail driving. but the exterior proportions were spot on - too bad Infiniti bungled updates to keep it competitively relevant in today's market. the current QX70 is still a loaded comfortable all conditions driver. just needs tech & exterior updates.

i will admit that the Cayenne is a highly capable off-roader - it made that way from the basic shared platform. i cant say the same for the BMW & M-B coupes that look merely like high-riding fastback-roof sedans.

To say that the Cayenne is a "highly capable" off-roader because of its "shared platform". which is a euphemism for VW Toerag, is bound to be the laugh of the day.

Yes, it can drive across dirt, but serious off-roaders are not abandoning their Wranglers and Land Cruisers for Cayennes.

The VW Toecrap is a terrible design in a variety of ways. For its intended purpose the Altas is by far better and you don't pay extra for the deeply compromised design of the crossover named after a group of terrorists.
