Thats actually a very smart move by Elon. There is a very well educated tech workforce there, and it is close enough to San Antonio that they can feed off some of Toyotas supplier base there.

Austin is said to be the "weird" by the slogan the BIA adopted for the city. Lots of tech and creative types. When you name your child an oddball code of letters and numbers this choice is not a surprise at all. They can visit Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop and say hi to the "Boss" and the crew there.

That would be insane if cars are produced in Austin by the end of the year. It makes sense due to the tech talent, land costs, central location, and a rare government that is both business friendly and socially liberal.

Ft Worth would be better than Austin. Much easier to get in and out of. Better air and trucking hub, just as close to Houston and better infrastructure. It also has a lower cost of living. Just keep them out of Dallas.

Why not? Elon is basically saying F U to the People's Republic of California.

Austin is good for talent but not so good logistically. It’s hard to get to, traffic sucks, it’s really a small town that’s outgrown itself. Wages will have to be high because of the cost of living. On top of that it’s a college town. Austin has a lot of potential issues.

If Musk was really a visionary - he might consider building a plant near South Padre Island. Its a bit of a redneck town now but with a little industry, it could turn into Texas's version of South Beach. The beaches are SOOOO beautiful there!

I'm sure Texas would give him tons of money to move there. He could be a trailblazer

I think that is right around the area where SpaceX has one of their main manufacturing and launch facilities, Boca Chica.
