KIA Says It's Still BETTING On Sedans. Are YOU Taking THAT Bet?
Having convinced themselves that they’ve found a winning strategy, Korean automakers are doubling down on what’s worked already. That includes maintaining a clear distinction between crossovers and sedans — the latter of which Kia believes holds the secret to enjoying yourself behind the wheel.

“The driving experience between the crossover-type vehicle and the sedan type vehicle especially when you have someone like Albert Biermann [former head of Hyundai R&D and ex-BMW M chief engineer] in your stable can be pretty remarkable,” James Bell, Kia’s head of corporate communications, said in a recent chat.

Kia is swimming upstream against the tide with sedans...good luck, you'll need it.

Rio, Forte, Optima, Cadenza, Stinger, K900...3 too many

The Credenza and the Caninehundred are OKish cars but what's the point?

Keep: Rio, Optima, Stinger

Reposition the Stinger with a 2.0T at $27K NOT $33K and the TTV6 at $32K. It has to be in the Camaro/Charger sweet spot to base. A Stinger V8 for $37K would be genius.

Sedans are viable but they have to be a value and the Stinger is $5-8K too expensive for what it is.

What he said. Kia could actually go Genesis style and call the brand "Stinger" but instead of going high priced just go sporty 2 CUVs and 2 sedans.

Agree with that

If that's the case why are they thrusting axing out the 2nd generation Stinger which sells better than Cadenza and K900? And why do they not realize they have too many executive sedans?

Hyundai/Kia/Genesis has poor discipline. Hyundai dealers got the Equus so of course Kia had to have a Caninehundred. The K900 should not be in the American market when they are trying to sell the G80 and G90 at Genesis. Arguably, the Cadenza would make a better Genesis product (ES competitor) than the good but dull G70.

The Stinger is by far their best "premium" sedan, but they positioned it all wrong.

In the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis company, Kia needs to be their "Dodge" division with performance as the calling card. The Stinger should be their Charger and they should market a 2-door Challenger. They could ditch the Rio and possibly even the Forte to have Kia be one step up from Hyundai. Genesis should be their "Cadillac" division i.e. a premium-performing brand doggedly building its clientele.

But 6 sedans are at least three too many and then when you add in the Accent, Elantra, Sonata, G70, G80, and G90, the company has a shitload of sedans that need pruning.

Yes, I am with Kia in that there is still a market for sedans. However, I am not convinced that Kia sedans are viable in that market.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Those brands that have established a solid footprint in the market with their sedans will continue to maintain profits and relatively healthy sales with sedans. Brands such as Honda, Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, possibly Hyundai and Audi, along with the Lexus ES. I once would have included Nissan in there, but they are struggling. Tesla is the other solid bet when it comes to sedans.

If the GV80 does not find success, then Genesis may as well close its books. The G80 shows promise, but so did the G70 and sales of the latter weren't even half of what the Acura TLX sold in 2019.

Well the Stinger AWD can make the point that its a viable alternative to a compact SUV. Its hatchback cargo space is very nicely sized. Further since 97 to 98% of SUV/CUV owners never take their vehicle off pavement I can see Kia position of this. Besides the Stinger is really a hatchback. It will certainly out handle any SUV. it has plenty of people and cargo room. Its sporty to drive. I think sedans like this do have a place in the car market.
