Software Issues Cripple Entire Volkswagen EV Program

Volkswagen’s software issues are spreading to its petrol-powered machines according to new reports. German media outlets are reporting that the company’s Golf Mk8, the eighth generation of Volkswagen’s infamous five-door hatchback vehicle is experiencing problems with the software. The issues are causing the company to rethink current deliveries of the car in favor of parking the car until the problem is recognized.

Volkswagen has concluded that the Golf Mk8 should not be transported to ab owner’s home. The German automaker announced Thursday that it would halt deliveries until further notice, recognizing that the problem must be identified before anyone else receives a car featuring a faulty software system.

Stellar VW quality!

Does VW still offer the US 6 year, 72,000 mile warranty?

Nope. it was a short-term hoax.

Honest question: How in hell can VW with all its engineering might have TWO cars get to production with fatal software issues that ground production?

@MDarringer - honest answer: the same way your beloved Ford has decade after decade had some of the largest recalls due to fatal engineering issues. Don't be a fool, even your cell phone requires periodic operating system downloads to update/repair glitches.

And that response shows your lack of understanding of recalls in the current time frame. Manufacturers who do public recalls are bird dogging issues proactively. Several manufacturers--Audi for one--keep their recalls hush hush and are performed sometimes without the knowledge of the customer, which allows Audi dealers to cheat the system. I'd rather drive a brand that is quick to recall, check, and remedy than to have one that is shady and hides things.

As for VW, they are a clusterfuck of warranty issues as is.

Car companies have too few engineers spread over too many models and development projects.

Umm no. Manufacturers are NOT developing separate electronic architectures for every single model. They create a "current generation" architecture that is used across models. Thus, as we are seeing here, an f'ed up architecture spreads across models. Moreover, distinct models really aren't that distinct under the sheet metal.

And yet VW has 35k deposits for the ID.3.

And how does a software issue with the Golf Mk8, a gas/diesel powered vehicle, in any way relate to VW's EV program? Two completely different vehicles, and likely not a shred of computer code common to them both.

Stupidly ignorant statement: "Two completely different vehicles, and likely not a shred of computer code common to them both."

Just the opposite.

More than likely they would have quite a LOT in common except for "engine management" differences.

Oh come on Matt. Stop with the name calling and just speak intelligently. I've been in several EVs. Their electronic functions are vastly different. Sure, the infotainment system could have some overlap, but it's the basic car functionality that is being discussed here, and that is going to be vastly different between an EV and ICE vehicle.

dieselgate almost did VW in too
