Germans Run For Cover After Genesis Releases MSRP For 2021 Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 has been gunning for the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, and BMW 5 Series since 2016 with some cause for hope, even if Genesis only sold about a fifth as many G80s than the 5 Series in North America last year. The second-generation 2021 G80 should be its sternest challenge to the Germans yet. The looks are stunning, and its cheaper than the competition, even with a modest price bump.

The base price is $47,700, with various trims and colors that could add over $20,000 to that price. Rear-wheel drive is standard, as is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that Genesis says makes 300 horsepower, the proper amount of horsepower.

At $37K base it would be "winner winner chicken dinner" because that would make it a tremendous value relative to the Germans and in effect make it a 5 Series sized vehicle for a 3 Series price. THAT strategy would work for Genesis. But nearly $50K that *poof* goes to $70K simply won't. They also need Genesis signage at dealers and dedicated Genesis space....or separate dealers. Hyundai is getting the marketing of Genesis stupidly wrong.

I agree but I think it could have been done even in the low 40s, say $42k. It definitely is a looker, pretty good equipment even in the base model. It is good for someone to come along and make something as good or better than the Germans to make them re-think once in a while. Lexus certainly did it when the LS400 debuted although I am not sure % wise how much less expensive it was to the German competition.

The Hyundai Genesis/G80 has always undercut its rivals and it barely made a dent. The most it sold were about 1K units per month while the Germans were selling anywhere from 2x to 5x that. Maybe the new car will change minds, but it hasn't worked (not even close) for the G90.

Arguably though when there is (1) no marketing, (2) no dealer strategy, and (3) no attractive leasing, Genesis has done remarkably well.

I would agree with the no dealer strategy, but I've seen more marketing efforts from Genesis than the Germans (based on my experience and observations) and they've always had incentives/offers. Maybe getting traffic to the dealerships and to the websites is what is missing, but I can't say it's for a lack of effort.

I remember attending two major auto shows and the new G70 was getting TONS of attention. People crowded the car nonstop inside and there were LINES of the G70 being test driven all around the city. I thought it was going to completely dominate in sales. But it didn't happen and not even close. Maybe there's a disconnect when it comes to buyers making that final decision.

So, what kind of marketing does Genesis do? Oh that's right John Legend and his UGLY wife.
So, where is the aggressive leasing like BMW, Audi, and MD do? #MIA
So, at the HYUNDAI lot, where you you find the Genesis brand? That's right, parked next to the selection of Accents.

Marketing is marketing especially at Super Bowl prices and exposure, whether you think someone is attractive or not.

The G70 lease starts at less than a CLA lease. A G80 lease starts at less than a C-Class lease. A G90 lease starts at less than an E53 lease.

I do agree that Genesis needed separate dealerships. Same thing affected Infiniti's success in my opinion.

I can live without the hash mark front lights and side lights for sure. A 2.5L Turbo engine is a pass. Especially in a car like this. Cost in CAD will be absurd. I would bring this car into Canada to sell.

The Stinger's TTV6 should have been the base engine with a 500 horsepower V8 as the step up.

@MD- Always so easy to see a path forward if you take a step back and think for 5 minutes. I have no idea how decisions like this (so many like this) get past a board to steering committee.

Sadly, those hash marks are the only design elements that give it any distinction outside of that garish grille. Take the hash marks out and it's just another also-ran design, stolen from the first A7, which is still kind of is, but you know what I mean.

Genesis is nothing more than a cheap knockoff of the established players (MB, BMW and Audi). Good luck to them and they will definitely need it.

I would >>> partially agree <<< with that .... back in the 1950's and 60's " Made in Japan " meant cheap knockoff. Not too many people currently give a Thumbs Down to Toyota

I have stayed away from products when I do not like the people endorsing and / or advertising them. John Legend & wife can put their politics where the sun don't shine.

The Japanese premium/luxury automakers (Acura, Lexus and Infiniti) to a lesser extent are cheaper knockoffs of the established players (MB, BMW and Audi).
