Just Another Appliance: Volvo To Emasculate All New Models - Limits Top Speed To Dark Ages

As promised last year, Volvo has announced that every new car it makes now comes with a limited top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h).

According to the automaker, the limitation goes beyond regulation and legislation “to help close the remaining gap to zero serious injuries and fatalities in traffic.”

(1) What would you expect from a car from a deeply socialist country?
(2) Yet another reason NOT to buy a Volvo.

In the US the highest average speed in fatal accidents is 70mph in GA. Iowa's average speed in fatal accidents is 21mph (those darn tractors). The only place this new restriction by Volvo would impact would be Germany.

Actually coming from a state where 80 mph is as the norm and everyone goes 10 mph over, that's not leaving at lot of headroom to pass. True you wont be going a 112 mph, however you need the reserve to accelerate to pass instead you are gradually topping out lengthening the time to perform the pass.

So while technically you have a point, it is academic not a realistic argument.

Actually the max speed can be legally set to 85 mph in Texas

OK, so you contradicted your own statement when you stated, "true you won't be going 112 mph".

You didn't pay attention... I'm passing at 95 (real world speed of 10 over) The vehicle is well into the taper off zone of power at that point. (The car doesn't just go like gang busters until 112)..

Realistically power will taper well before then due to gearing and power curve. That makes that pass at 95 pretty risky since i'm well into the top part of the speed zone in at that time., I doubt there is enough power to go past then slow back to 95 without needing a lot of room.

True to the brand's safety ethos. Wont faze the average Volvo owner in the slightest.

Safety ethos? You really need to look up that word. More like safety bullshit.

@PUG- On the money. Average Volo buyer does not know where they are made or what kind of engine they have. 112 or 150mph they will not care in the slightest. If it is used as part of their safety marketing it will fit right in.

If "characteristic spirit of a culture or community as manifested in its beliefs" doesn't describe safety minded Volvo owners I don't know what does Matt.

And yet again, you gloriously miss the point.

Probably doing it to save money on tires now just have to pay for "S" rated tires. for a lot of cars, big savings.

Drove a Volt for four years including interstate trips where the electronically limited speed of 101 mph was never an issue. Many vehicles in Europe have a speed governor, which sometimes is driver selectable, but more often it is not.

You just won your "pusillanimous" badge. You're a good boy scout.

I suspect if they never announced this no one would ever know.
