BMW To Allow Hardcore M2 To Wither Away In The EU

The upcoming emission standards for Europe will deny buyers there quite a few exciting sports cars and big-engined vehicles, with the BMW M2 sadly joining that list.

This has got to be really upsetting news for European sports car enthusiasts, as the M2 is one of the finest BMW M cars ever made. BimmerToday claims that production of the BMW M2 F87 for Europe will come to an end in fall 2020.

After reading the article, while yes is about tighter EU emission standards it is also about the M2 end of model life cycle.

"The BMW M2 Competition has remained the last vehicle to feature the S55 biturbo straight six engine. Adapting the power plant first introduced in 2014 to Europe’s stricter emissions regulations does not make much economic sense, especially since BMW plans to launch an all-new M2 in 2022."

The open block concept of the S55 won't allow much more reliable factory warranty power either. They are going to have to switch to the newer blocks in the #40i I6.

The reality in Europe is that it is becoming the forefront of automotive change from ice vehicles to electric vehicles. Due to the closeness of cities throughout Europe Electric vehicles can work fairly well. Further the amount of charging stations available now in Europe has dramatically improved. Like it or not Europe has always subscribed to a more socialistic environmental philosophy. Further fuel costs in Europe have always been much much higher than anywhere else in the world. This has dictated the reliance on smaller fuel efficient cars. With the VW diesel scandal a few years back "electric" is in ice is soon to be on the outs. An M2 for Europe no longer fits in BMW's philosophy as they are playing catch-up to VAG in the EV race. It used to be California being at the forefront of environmental laws. I would suggest now its Europe. Further since a lot of the European car makers sell in the USA it is only a matter of time until the electrification craze takes over here as well. The cancellation of sales of the M2 in Europe is but a precursor to what will soon happen here. Sad but true.
