WATCH: 2021 Genesis Review Should Give The Germans PLENTY To Worry About

The all-new 2021 Genesis G80 is one of the brand’s most anticipated models and everyone wants to know how good the executive sedan is compared to its well-established German rivals.

While it’s too early for a comparative review between the G80 and the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, today we bring you a detailed first review of the new Korean model courtesy of Asian Petrolhead.

The question isn't whether the G80 is credible in the A6/5/E segment because the first Genesis demonstrated that, the G80 was a leap forward, and the new G80 is better still.

The question is pricing which at $48K is $5K too high. Ask for $8K off right off the bat.

The question is dealer and dealer experience. Without many Genesis only dealers, you'll be dealt with as if you're an Accent driver sleeping on his mommy's sofa and perpetually jobless.

As for sales, Genesis does exceedingly well for a brand that its parent company treats with disinterest and neglect then forgets about and then decides to do something only to forget again.

Genesis has been around for 12+ years and is a case study of how NOT to launch a new brand and grow it.

In the luxury market, image/badge appeal matters, consumers simply aren’t going to pay upwards of $50k, $60k for a Hyundai.

We’ve since this before a Hyundai can throw in every option/feature including the kitchen sink, but at the end of the day, it’s still not a Mercedes/BMW.

The K900, the Equus, the Acura RLX, the Volvo S 90, all fantastic sedans giving you loads of options/features but will never hold a candle to BMW/Mercedes because they lack the badge appeal, image, and branding that a consumer gets when forking over upwards of $50k for those badges.

No one wants to or ever likes to admit they paid more than 40-50k for any brand not considered luxury, no matter how cool the features are.

Tesla was able to pull that off because they offered something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the Germans.

You can’t tell consumers we are giving you what the Germans give you, but cheaper, it worked a while for Lexus but now their sedans are flatlining against the Germans and their SUVS are coming under pressure too.

Simply put you can not beat Mercedes at being Mercedes no matter what options you throw in. Find your own identity, stop the knock off strategy.

I'd go V8 at base for $45K with more "Charger" than "E Class" in the demeanor of the car. If I can get an E Class worthy car at a C Class price that has some rumble and in-your-face attitude, that would set it apart.

My brother in law has a G80 and had a Genesis before it. His dad has a G90 with an Equus before it. They were 100% Mercedes but hated the reliability issues. Genesis is blissful, but people at the country club--they are old money--think they are on bad economic times for driving a Genesis. I can get away with nearly anything because I'm new money married to old money, but the old money crowd is very narrow in their thinking.

LOL unfortunately Genesis has to compete with certified pre owned as well which makes V8 benzes affordable and and E63 or even 6 cylinder 43 would trash the V8 charger/Genesis

Times have changed, the early 2000’s are gone and that’s when Lexus capitalized on Mercedes/BMW massive reliability issues, but now Benz appears to have it together with quality returning to their bullet proof era and has helped led them to become the #1 Luxury brand in the world.

I’m not saying nobody would want this car but we’ve seen this before, there’s nothing ground breaking here or game changing, it’s literally more of the same for less, I nearly fell asleep when I saw the interior.

Lexus, Infiniti, Acura, Volvo, Cadillac, and Hyundai have had trouble getting their sedans scraps from the Germans leftovers and unfortunately, this Genesis will just continue that saga LOL

And with competent marketing they could deal with "unfortunately Genesis has to compete with certified pre owned"

Do a commercial where someone is buying a CPO Mercedes--after being told they can't afford the real thing and will have to settle for used--and is being told to buy a vehicle warranty "because you know how expensive these things are to fix when something goes wrong" and then have John Legend walk up and drop the key fob to a Genesis and say "It's outside."

Genesis needs to market with a snark and sass of Jack In the Box and they are going to need to appear rude as their rail against the Germans that are expensive just out of warranty.

LMAO then they actually end up dissing themselves, “Genesis, the alternative to a USED Mercedes” LMAO, btw Mercedes has loved all the free PR they receive from rivals comparing themselves to the brand over the years

Last I checked John Legend/Chrissy Tiegen couldn’t make the billion dollar flop Quibi work...sooooo maybe Hyundai will want to go another route LOL

@car4life1 You gloriously missed the point try to slow down your arrogant superiority long enough to think outside your box, you know be inclusive...be tolerant...be accepting...

By OWNING the market position and by grabbing those buyers and treating them well , THAT'S how they would gain traction.

You seem to think Mercedes is invincible, but Lexus was able to scare the living shit out of them with superior engineering that resulted in a much more reliable car.

Relax...breathe...count to 10....repeat

You just proved my point...you referenced Lexus which I already mentioned earlier, again, listen this time... THERE IS NOTHING NEW HERE, we’ve seen it before, we’ve seen this story before and unfortunately Lexus is the only one that had the chance because they took a shot when the Germans were most vulnerable

But can I ask you....where is Lexus now? LOL oh ok, their saving grace are SUVs something Genesis has a lot of catching up to do with

And when it comes to Mercedes...Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t, check the scoreboard and get back 2 me

Lol...the S Class ended the LS, the E/5 thrashed the GS, and the C/3 made light work of the IS

Their bread and butter NX/RX are facing more competition than ever and on the decline

Another great candidate for the used car market in 3 years @ 50%+ depreciation. Kia K900's are available at CarMax for $25k, which means you can actually get them on the open market for $20k or lower. Can you say "MASSIVE DEPRECATION"?

Maybe we need to change our tune with these types of articles. How many more times will it be written "The Germans Should Be Worried". It's been, what, how many decades and the Germans are still not that worried.

Yes, there have been good, maybe even great, cars that have come and gone. The new G80 won't change that. These perceived "German Killers" just don't offer much to compel people to make the switch. I would even venture to say that they can't even take advantage of the upgrade from their non-premium brand step-ups (Honda to Acura, Toyota to Lexus, Hyundai/Kia to Genesis).
The only brand that really stood a chance was Lexus. They brought a level of reliability, whether perceived or real, to the luxury game that was never seen before. And it shows in their sales of the ES, NX and RX. And the success of those models rely heavily on the value prop. But outside of those three offerings, they are FAR behind the Germans.

It will always be a major uphill battle for Genesis. Not just because of the stigma of being a Korean brand and a new luxury brand, but because they haven't offered anything that makes them stand out. Nothing innovative in design, technology, powertrain or economy. They are touting the new G80 as offering some kind of smart adaptive cruise that adjusts to a driver's driving patterns as a "first" in highway driving? HUH? How many driving patterns occur in highway driving?

Yup. Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche offer interiors that Tesla and the Koreans can't match. The German cars FEEL and LOOK like luxury and they carry a certain history and prestige along with them. That's what their target buyers are looking for. Sure there are always going to be some folks that "don't care about the badge" and just want to save a few bucks. But at the end of the day, there's always going to be a big divide between the German luxury cars and all the other manufacturers, just like there's a big divide between Rolls/Bentley and the Germans.

They offer better interiors so you'll be less pissed off when you're sitting inside waiting for a two truck.

I think it's an uphill fight against the established Europeans. Asia does make a better more reliable product. However its name recognition on how wealthy people want to show off their money. That's why a lot of people put up with unreliable Mercedes, BMW's and Audi's and not go Lexus, Hyundai etc.
