2021 BMW 5-Series Is HERE! Is BETTER SAMENESS The RIGHT Recipe For Them Right Now? Or Have Their Products Become The ULTIMATE BOREDOM Machines?
Today, BMW is proud to announce the updated, 2021 7th generation 5 Series Sedan. With improvements in exterior and interior design, aerodynamics and technology, plus the introduction of a new 48v mild hybrid system, this generation of 5 Series continues to deliver cutting-edge technology and performance into the sixth decade of 5 Series production. ?

    * 523 hp M550i xDrive Sedan ?

First introduced in 1972, the BMW 5 Series has continuously built its reputation as the executive sport sedan for discerning buyers by delivering performance, modern design, comfort and technology expected from a BMW. ?MSRP pricing for the 2021 BMW 5 Series sedan is $54,200 for the 530i Sedan, $56,500 for the 530i xDrive Sedan, $57,200 for the 530e Sedan, $59,500 for the 530e xDrive Sedan, $59,450 for the 540i Sedan, $61,750 for the 540i xDrive Sedan and $76,800 for the M550i xDrive Sedan.

Most BMW enthusiasts are probably just glad to see a normal sized grill.

Agreed but the overall design is rather forgettable

The 5 Series is such a rental-fleet Passat at heart.

BMW has robbed its cars of all their sporting intent.

The base model and an M5 should feel very similar in terms of handling rather than the base model being dull and having to pay double the price to get what a BMW really should be.

Did they really put a M badge on the fender of a 530e?

Yes they did. So very sad...

A 9.09kWh (usable) battery in an AWD car that size, it will likely have 15-17 EPA miles of range. As usual, they don't get the point of a PHEV. Same as Mercedes. The battery, combined with net efficiency of the EV drivetrain, has to provide enough EV range for a significant number of drivers to be able to do their daily driving under EV power.

I realize that BMW isn't the brand for efficiency. It's supposed to be a great driving machine. But when you move into specific categories of vehicles you have to meet expectations. And if you're BMW (or Mercedes or Audi), many expect you to exceed them. When it comes to EV powertrains, Germany (with the exception of the Taycan) is getting the butts kicked by Tesla, Japan and South Korea.

This is boring but actually better than the design direction BMW is going in with its massive pig snout grille on the upcoming 4-Series.

boring mid-cycle refresh/facelift. not sure why we're expecting anything revolutionary here

These things evolve with the speed of glaciers. That's the way it is with German sedans nowadays.

It's also why sedan sales are sputtering (nearly 48% down for the 5 Series). Although 3 Series sales are up (aggressive leasing), they are way down from where it used to be in volume.

The German sedans evolve at a snail's pace partially due to lazy design and also due to plummeting sales. SUVs have taken market share for over 5 years and with gas prices so low, the plummeting sales for sedans is set to continue.

It's fine. Slightly better and sharper than before, and better than the new looks of its chief rival the E-Class.

I mean, what do you want? This thing is perfectly designed for its mission, to communicate success for middle-upper managers. To do that it has to look modern and new, so it communicates that the buyer has the latest model. Success also has a particular "look" and that look is tied to the heritage of German car design. If you stray too far from that look, you stray too far from the image of success.

This is actually a worldwide trend with luxury; classical European design and aesthetics are pretty much the de facto language of luxury. Japan and China have their own culture of luxury and finery, as examples, but they have been less successful in making it a standard for quality and wealth across the globe. That gets into a whole thing about "default" culture being Western, and blah blah blah.

Point is, it looks good and fresh within the preset parameters of what its target demographic considers to be "luxurious", which incidentally has a large overlap with the public's opinion at large.

If you want something crazy, there's Lexus, but everyone seems to complain about them too.

Why are so many folks over reacting? This not a new generation 5 Series--its a mere LCI (Life Cycle Impluse)!

Needs a complete redesign. This 5-Series is what happened when BMW tried to create a Lexus. And just like Lexus this 5-series has fallen out of flavor. A new grill isn't going to save it. I don't even like this car in M5 trim.

Boring, uninspired, the same old same old formula is a looser. Sales will go out the window and BMW will blame everyone but the idiot that green lighted the design to remain nearly identical to the previous iteration. Customers want inspiring design, this "new" car, if we can call it that will inspire only the dead and seriously mentally challenged. Looser.

Look if BMW offered a wagon, raised it up 3 inches and called it a "Cross Treck" I'm sure it would sell just fine.

Boredom is the worst design you can get

Probably should hire some Lexus designers to give it a kick, no matter what the outcome might be
