WHAT Is The Customer That Used To RELIGIOUSLY Buy The BMW M Car Driving These Days INSTEAD?
BMW had a long run as king of the hill of premium sport performance vehicles. Year after year, we would see new 'M' cars in every 'hot' places wherever we went.

Or when we went to the Bimmerfest's and Car and Coffee (Sometimes known as Cars and Very Sad Men), you would see the brand new ones appearing and being shown off to adoring eyes.

But A LOT has changed in the past few years.

And even though the 'M' series are still very nice rides, we NEVER see the volume that we used to. In fact, it's downright scary how FEW we see yet we know none of those people have stopped driving.

So our question is, WHAT are these customers buying instead and WHY do you think they've made the choices they've made?

And has there ever been a better time to STEAL one used?

Spies, discuss...

A few probably switched to the Model 3 Performance

Sadly it may be true. The car enthusiast we know is disappearing, and the new generation is more excited about self driving capabilities and tech in the car, then the feel of actually driving a car around a corner.

@jeffgall, I think you would be surprised at a Model 3 performance. It actually handles a lot like an e39 M5. Nice indeed. The aural thrill is not there and no shifting either but the actual handling, suspension tuning and such are very close to the e39 M5 in my opinion.

Plus you can tweak the settings in Track Mode v2 to let you do crazy drifts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqDcZO7ZiVw

///AMG, it’s the best selling performance division and a thorn in every sports car’s side right now, luxury/sport without much compromise

Agree that AMG is doing it better these days

BMW lost me a LONG time ago when they started offering M packages on the non M cars and I had many M3 and M5's over the years and a Z8. That and M cars used to be special but become just another homogenized trim option as they chased market share and diluted the heritage. Sad.

A Mercedes with the AMG trim level is better than a BMW with the M trim level. I know a guy who went from always having the latest M3 to a Giulia Quadracrappio because he was smitten. The Alfa Romeo burned him with breakdowns, incessant dealer trips, and naggingly apparent lack of quality control. He now drives an AMG.

The rise of the Porsche Cayenne and Macan lines parallel the fall of the BMW M line. Former M3/M5 drivers now drive Cayenne.

If you bought a BMW M - you did so because you wanted 'sporty' but needed space and a little practicality. Oh, and you had a small c*ck also so you were compensating for something.

That segment (with a few exceptions who bought AMG) moved over to the Macan/Cayenne.

When I drove the Macan, it felt more like a replacement for the terribly overweight Cayenne and it has far better reflexes. The Cayenne coupe should replace the Cayenne. it looks amazing. I'd definitely take a Porsche Macan over the M4.

When BMW started moving away from its roots I crossed over from M cars to a C7 and GT350R and haven't looked backed.
